We are looking for a Project Manager, Energy & Carbon Reduction Initiatives to join our Climate Action team within the Real Estate division. This role will be responsible for developing and executing energy efficiency and decarbonization projects that support Sobeys' climate objectives while delivering operational and financial value to the business.
The ideal candidate will combine strong project management capabilities with technical knowledge of sustainability, energy systems, and carbon reduction strategies.
What you’ll focus on:
Climate Action Program Delivery
- Develop and execute implementation strategies for energy efficiency and carbon reduction projects across the Sobeys real estate portfolio.
- Support the delivery of Sobeys' 2030 Climate Action Plan through project execution, performance tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop site-specific decarbonization roadmaps for real estate assets to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions.
- Establish project priorities and implementation plans aligned with annual budget commitments and corporate sustainability targets.
Project Management
- Lead energy and carbon reduction projects from concept through execution and close-out.
- Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and resource plans.
- Coordinate internal stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and vendors to ensure successful project delivery.
- Provide regular reporting on project status, budgets, schedules, risks, and expected carbon reduction outcomes.
- Ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with company standards.
Governance & Procurement
- Lead procurement and tendering processes in accordance with corporate governance requirements.
- Evaluate proposals and recommend solutions that maximize energy savings, emissions reduction, and return on investment.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies, and industry best practices.
Innovation & Sustainability Leadership
- Act as a national subject matter expert on energy efficiency, sustainability, and decarbonization initiatives within the Real Estate and Construction teams.
- Identify, evaluate, and pilot emerging technologies and innovative carbon-abatement solutions.
- Lead proof-of-concept projects and assess their technical, operational, financial, and environmental performance.
- Support sustainability reporting, emissions tracking, KPI development, and performance measurement activities.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaborate with Real Estate, Construction, Operations, Maintenance, Finance, and external partners to advance climate action initiatives.
- Promote sustainability awareness and support organizational change management efforts related to decarbonization projects.
What you should have:
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Energy Management, Commerce, or a related discipline.
Experience
- Minimum 8 years of overall project management experience, ideally delivering complex capital, engineering, or operational initiatives.
- 3-5 years of direct experience in sustainability, energy management, carbon reduction, or related environmental initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience leading projects from planning through implementation and reporting.
- Experience developing business cases, managing budgets, and coordinating multiple stakeholders.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and sustainability best practices.
- Experience with commercial or industrial refrigeration systems, including energy efficiency, optimization, maintenance, or capital improvement initiatives.
- Familiarity with green building frameworks and reporting standards such as LEED, GRESB, ENERGY STAR, BOMA BEST, or similar programs.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
- Experience analyzing energy, emissions, and financial performance data is considered an asset.
Additional Qualifications
- Excellent communication, organizational, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating within cross-functional teams.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is considered a strong asset.
