Position Overview
This position is responsible for surface-mine engineering activities, with a focus on short-range planning, drill-and-blast engineering, and operational support. The role supports production by developing executable plans, blast layouts, and working closely with operations to ensure production and safety targets are met.
Accountability
Reporting to the Principal Engineer, the Mine Engineer in Training is responsible for coordinating and executing:
- Daily to 2-week mine plans
- Short-range production scheduling
- Drill and blast design and implementation
- Operational support activities
Key Responsibilities
Short Range Planning & Scheduling
- Develop and maintain daily and 2-week mine plans
- Translate long-term plans into practical, executable short-range schedules
- Coordinate with operations to ensure plans are achievable
- Monitor plan performance and adjust schedules as required
Drill & Blast Engineering
- Design and optimize drill patterns and blast layouts
- Ensure safe and efficient blasting practices
- Analyze blast results and implement continuous improvements
- Coordinate with drilling and blasting personnel
Operations Support
- Provide day-to-day technical support to mine operations
- Troubleshoot production issues and provide solutions
- Work closely with pit supervisors and field personnel
General Engineering Duties
- Collaborate with Mine Operations, Geology, Survey, and technical teams
- Participate in meetings, presentations, and improvement initiatives
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution
- Mining Engineering preferred
- Experience in open pit mining operations is an asset
- Experience with short-range planning and drill & blast considered a strong asset
Skills & Competencies
- Strong commitment to safety and a zero-incident workplace
- Solid understanding of open pit mining operations, including:
- Bench design
- Haul roads
- Dump development
- Practical knowledge of drilling and blasting techniques
- Experience with MineSight® or Deswik® considered an asset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, operations-driven environment
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Good time management and ability to adapt to changing priorities
