About Us
Calvary Child & Family Services provides structured, intensive support to vulnerable children and youth with complex behavioural, emotional, and mental health needs. The youth supported through our programs may present with aggressive behaviours, emotional dysregulation, neurodevelopmental diagnoses (including ADHD, ADD, Autism), trauma histories, and involvement with the child welfare and/or criminal justice systems.
This role is best suited for professionals who are confident working in high-responsibility environments and who understand the realities of foster care and group home support.
Position Summary
We are seeking experienced Child and Youth Mentors to provide direct support to youth living in foster and group home settings. This is not an entry-level role and requires individuals who can work independently, apply sound judgment in high-risk situations, and maintain consistent boundaries.
Mentors are responsible for actively teaching life skills, supporting emotional regulation, promoting community engagement, and responding appropriately to behavioural escalations, while ensuring the safety and well-being of youth and others in the home.
Availability for evenings and weekends is essential, as these shifts align with periods of increased need and behavioural intensity.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide structured, one-on-one support to youth with complex behavioural and mental health needs in foster and group home environments
- Respond effectively to behavioural escalations and crisis situations using approved de-escalation and intervention strategies.
- Teach and reinforce practical life skills
- Support youth in accessing and participating in community-based activities, appointments, and pro-social programs.
- Model appropriate communication, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills.
- Maintain clear professional boundaries while building consistent, supportive relationships.
- Complete detailed and timely documentation, including incident reports, shift summaries, and communication logs.
- Provide transportation in accordance with agency policies.
- Administer medication when trained and authorized, in compliance with policy.
- Personal care support may be required as outlined in individual care plans, though the primary focus of the role is behavioural support and skill development.

Mandatory Qualifications (Applications Without These Will Not Be Considered)
- Post-secondary education in Child and Youth Care, Social Services, Developmental Services, or a related field.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of direct experience working with vulnerable or at-risk youth in foster homes, group homes, or residential care settings.
- Demonstrated experience supporting youth with behavioural challenges, emotional dysregulation, and mental health needs.
- Valid Broad Record Check (within the last 6 months or willingness to obtain).
- Valid Child Welfare Record Check.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C.
- Crisis intervention training (CPI, TCI, UMAB, or equivalent). UMAB training through Calvary is required.
- Valid G-Class Driver’s License, clean Driver’s Abstract, and access to a commercially insured vehicle.
- Up-to-date immunizations, TB test and medical assessments
- Access to an commercial insured vehicle.
