ABOUT THE ROLE
The DESIGN TECHNICIAN works as part of a team to develop plans for electrical distribution and telecommunications outside plant networks. This position blends office-based design and drafting work with regular opportunities to conduct field survey work. Successful applicants will have strong AutoCAD skills, combined with a dedication to producing quality work.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
As part of our team you will:
DRAFTING & DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
- Create electrical distribution and telecommunications drawings using AutoCAD
- Develop design layouts based on inputs from Engineering Technicians and Engineers
- Prepare construction drawings with high precision and accurate scaling
- Maintain technical and aesthetic design standards
DRAWING MANAGEMENT & REVISIONS
- Update and modify existing drawings based on project changes
- Prepare and finalize as-built drawings reflecting field conditions
- Ensure all revisions meet project specifications
DATA ACQUISITION & FIELD INTEGRATION
- Request and incorporate land base and underground utility information
- Collect field data using survey equipment (e.g., clearances, cable heights, pole profiles, surroundings)
- Translate field data into drafting output
QUALITY CONTROL & STANDARDS COMPLIANCE
- Ensure drawings meet engineering standards and client specifications
- Maintain consistency in presentation, quality, and accuracy
- Support compliance with internal drafting standards
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Diploma/Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: 1 to 5 years of related experience
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
- Microsoft Office proficiency
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & ANALYTICAL SKILLS
- Strong mathematical skills
- Ability to interpret engineering inputs and convert into design layouts
COMMUNICATION & COLLABORATION
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to work with engineers, technicians, and field teams
FIELD & MOBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Field work required for data collection
- Must use personal vehicle
WORK AUTHORIZATION: Eligible to work in Canada
LOCATION: Oakville, Pickering, Cambridge, London
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The role fundamentally depends on accurate translation of real-world site conditions into engineering drawings
- Requires seamless movement between: Office - producing detailed, scaled designs (AutoCAD, MicroStation), Field - validating measurements, collecting data (clearances, pole profiles, surroundings)
- Directly impacts: Design accuracy, Construction execution and Client deliverables and compliance
