SCOPE
Reporting to Manager, Advising Services, Undergraduate Programs, the incumbent provides advice to students, selects appropriate programs and supports individual student success, especially for readmitted students and those on conditional standing.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Counsel and advise undergraduate students in matters relating to their academic pursuits and career aspirations.
• Evaluate students’ academic records for degree and program requirements.
• Respond to student queries concerning programs and general information.
• Deliver advising sessions for new students.
• Deliver advising sessions for readmitted students and those on conditional standing.
• Support the student recruitment activities by assisting the Student Recruitment Office in visits to Cegeps, by meeting prospective students.
• Recommend, to the Manager, Advising Services, rulings on specific student requests.
• Advise students facing academic difficulties (students on conditional standing and readmitted students) and monitors their academic performance.
• Process Transfer Credit Requests.
• Serve on Faculty and University committees when needed.
• Assist the Manager, Advising Services in academic advising projects as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce or Business Administration or in a related field related and two to four years of related work experience advising students in an academic setting.
• Resourceful team player dedicated to helping students succeed.
• Experience in dealing with confidential and sensitive personal matters with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
• Good presentation and public speaking skills.
• Ability to work outside normal working hours (e.g. special events).
• Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English; good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken French and basic knowledge (Level 3) of written French. Knowledge of a third language an asset.
• Good knowledge (intermediate level) of Word and Excel. Basic knowledge of PowerPoint.
• Aptitude to work in a service-orientated environment as both a team member and independently.
• Working familiarity with university academic regulations. Familiarity with the JMSB’s undergraduate programs an asset.
• Teaching experience at the University level an asset.
• Knowledge of the Student Information Systems (SIS) an asset.
