The Investor Relations (IR) team is primarily responsible for ongoing communication with the investment community including existing and prospective institutional shareholders, as well as sell side equity research analysts. The team’s mandate also includes providing market intelligence to internal stakeholders.
The Director, Investor Relations is an integral part of the IR team, and is responsible for providing key analytical and marketing support to the IR strategy and program. You will be involved with all IR activities including quarter end reporting and investor relations marketing events. In addition, the role is responsible for preparation of several regular management reports and for developing and maintaining the tools and processes necessary to support an effective IR function.
Position Responsibilities:
Play a leading role in the quarter-end process:
Responsible for identifying potential earnings calls questions and collaborate with subject matter experts throughout the organization in the preparation of responses.
Contribute to the development and drafting of earnings press release, developing slides and speaking notes for the earnings conference call/webcast.
Summarize the Street's pre- and post-call sentiment. This analysis supports IR and senior management's ability to effectively communicate key messaging to the external community.
Review and analyze the earnings calls of peers as part of the quarter end activities. This involves analyzing peer company performance relative to analyst expectations and reporting on the performance of key business lines.
Support the preparation of other quarterly deliverables such as company fact sheets and Board reports for use by various internal and external stakeholders.
Coordinate closely with the Rating Agency Management team in Treasury.
Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including subject matter experts at business segments, finance and actuarial professionals across the organization, senior and executive management, sell side analysts and associates, and institutional investors.
Develop processes & procedures to support an effective IR program. This includes automating and leveraging data tools such as NASDAQ IRI, Bloomberg, Capital IQ, etc. to effectively respond to ad hoc requests from the IR team and/or senior management.
Provide leadership and mentoring to junior IR team members. This includes the assignment and review of work assignments.
Contribute to planning and implementation of a comprehensive IR marketing and shareholder engagement plan, including:
The identification of key global investor targets;
The annual development and implementation of a global IR marketing schedule;
Plan and implement investor relations marketing events;
Work with senior management to ensure the appropriate messages are included in all investor interactions;
Prepare and review supporting materials including key messages, presentation slides and speaking notes for IR events such as roadshows, investor conferences, 1-on-1 meetings and Investor Days;
Participation at the IR events may require travel.
Participate in ad hoc or special projects as required.
Required Qualifications:
Degree in finance/accounting/actuarial. CA, CFA, FSA or MBA is desirable;
5+ years of related work experience
Solid understanding of financial and capital markets;
Past Equity Research, Investment Banking or Institutional Sales experience is an asset.
Solid understanding of the insurance business and/or Manulife’s products and distribution strategies is desirable;
Marketing/communications experience, particularly related to IR would be an asset;
Solid analytical capability; financial modeling experience;
Strong attention to detail;
Superior Excel and PowerPoint skills;
Strong written and verbal communication skills;
Ability to work in a dynamic environment; prioritizing tasks to meet client demands & changing market conditions;
Strong interpersonal and well-developed relationship management skills;
Problems/Challenges:
Must effectively manage the investment community’s expectations and requests for information;
Must be able to exercise judgment in communication of results / events to outsiders;
No margin for error in disclosure of information to outsiders;
Very tight deadlines – priorities can change intraday;
