About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a woman living in a memory care unit at a retirement home in Ottawa's west end. She has dementia and requires supervision for safety, as she no longer recognizes family members including grandchildren. She uses a walker or wheelchair for mobility and needs support with toileting and personal hygiene. The family is exploring additional care options to complement the facility's services, though they're uncertain how she will initially receive this support. She speaks English and Swedish, and follows the facility's meal schedule with breakfast at 8am, lunch at noon, and dinner at 5pm.
Responsibilities:
Provide supervision and companionship during afternoon visits, ensuring safety and comfort. Assist with mobility support using walker or wheelchair as needed. Help with toileting and personal hygiene tasks. Offer memory prompts and gentle redirection when needed. Engage her in appropriate activities during visits. Work collaboratively with facility staff and communicate clearly with family members about each visit.
What We're Looking For:
A caregiver with demonstrated experience in memory care settings who understands dementia and cognitive decline. You should be calm, patient, and able to make clients feel comfortable even when they don't remember you from previous visits. Strong skills in walker and wheelchair assistance are essential. Experience with toileting and hygiene support required. Bilingual capability in English and Swedish is preferred. You must be reliable, consistent, and communicate clearly with family members. The ideal caregiver takes initiative, respects independence where possible, and brings positive energy to each interaction.
Schedule:
Twice weekly visits on Monday and either Wednesday or Thursday, with three-hour shifts between 1pm and 4pm (after lunch, before dinner). The family member will be present for the first and possibly second visit to facilitate introductions and ensure comfort. Flexibility around the family member's schedule is needed for initial meet and greet timing. Start date targeted for late June 2026, with matching and virtual meet and greets occurring the week prior.
