The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division, offers a challenging opportunity for an experienced
lawyer to act as an Assistant Crown Attorney under the Dangerous Offender/Long-Term Offender Initiative.
In this position, you will take a senior, specialized role to assist in the administration of justice in High Risk
Offender criminal matters with a primary focus on the efficient prosecution of Section 810.1 and s. 810.2 and
Part XXIV criminal matters. The incumbent will report directly to the Director of Crown Operations, Toronto
Region.
Duties will include:
- Performing or assisting in prosecutions of High Risk Offender matters for criminal offences in the Ontario Court
of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice
- Providing mentoring, training and support to prosecutors engaged in Part XXIV hearings and s. 810.1 and
810.2 applications
- Preparing precedents for Part XXIV hearings, s. 810.1 or 810.2 related applications, motions, factums, draft
Orders and notices to assist trial Crowns in the prosecutions of High Risk Offenders
- Providing professional advice to police, related agencies, and the general public on criminal matters and
performing special justice-related High Risk Offender projects and involvement in community programmes as
required
- Acting as Regional Coordinator for High Risk Offender Prosecutions
- You have membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
- Working knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law
procedures, rules of evidence and case law
- Demonstrated experience in Part XXIV hearings and related applications
- Working knowledge and understanding of the role and function of a prosecutor in the criminal justice system in
Ontario
- Experience in or readiness to conduct prosecutions in the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of
Justice
- Demonstrated judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies
- Demonstrated research and analytical ability to organize a principled approach to cases and issues
- Demonstrated writing and advocacy skills
- Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team within the criminal justice system and with community stakeholders
- Technical ability to work effectively with computer technology and databases made available to professional staff
