About The DNA LAB
The DNA LAB is a Canadian-owned DNA testing laboratory based in Guelph, Ontario. We provide legal and other relationship DNA testing services to individuals, legal professionals, government agencies, and community organizations across Canada.
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented independent contractor to perform mobile DNA sample collections in Kingston and surrounding areas. Assignments are offered on an as-needed basis, with no guaranteed minimum number of appointments. Contractors may accept or decline individual assignments based on their availability.
Responsibilities
- Travel to collection locations designated by The DNA LAB, which may include correctional or remand facilities.
- Collect buccal swab samples from donors in accordance with approved procedures.
- Verify donor identities and accurately complete all required documentation.
- Maintain strict chain of custody throughout the collection process.
- Package and ship samples and accompanying documents promptly and securely.
- Protect confidential personal, identification, and DNA testing information.
- Use only equipment, forms, systems, and communication methods approved by The DNA LAB.
- Promptly report any collection, documentation, privacy, shipping, or chain-of-custody issues.
Qualifications
- Professional, dependable, organized, and attentive to detail.
- Comfortable verifying identification and completing precise legal documentation.
- Able to maintain strict confidentiality and follow chain-of-custody procedures.
- Able to complete The DNA LAB’s required training and competency-approval process.
- Valid driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation.
- Able to travel within the designated service area.
- Must not have been convicted of a criminal offence unless a pardon has been granted or a record suspension has been ordered.
- Legally able to provide and invoice for services as an independent contractor.
Experience in healthcare, nursing, phlebotomy, laboratory work, paramedicine, corrections, mobile specimen collection, legal DNA collection, or another related field is an asset. Additional language skills are also an asset.
Insurance Requirements
Before accepting assignments, the successful contractor must maintain and provide proof of:
- Commercial general liability insurance of at least $2,000,000 per occurrence.
- Professional liability, errors and omissions, or malpractice insurance of at least $2,000,000, covering the collection services.
- Automobile liability insurance of at least $2,000,000 for any vehicle used for assignments.
- Workers’ compensation, WSIB, WCB, or equivalent coverage where legally required.
Compensation
- Standard collections: $40 per individual donor for appointments within a 60-kilometre round trip from the contractor’s approved address.
- Mileage: $0.50 per kilometre for travel exceeding the first 60 kilometres round trip, calculated per appointment.
Important Information
This is an independent-contractor opportunity and not an employment position. There are no guaranteed assignments or minimum hours. Contractors are responsible for their own taxes, registrations, insurance, transportation, and operating expenses except for expenses specifically identified as reimbursable.
