General Accountant

About the Opportunity
Our client is a well-established Canadian organization with a diverse portfolio of operating companies. They are seeking a technically strong General Accountant to join their growing finance team.
This position is ideal for an intermediate accountant who enjoys hands-on accounting, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and has a passion for improving processes through technology. You'll work closely with the Controller and collaborate with a large finance team while supporting financial reporting, reconciliations, compliance activities, and continuous process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
*
Perform full-cycle accounting, including month-end activities and balance sheet reconciliations.
*
Prepare accurate financial reports and support monthly and year-end close processes.
*
Assist with indirect tax reporting and compliance requirements.
*
Maintain and reconcile tax-related accounts and supporting documentation.
*
Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules and responding to audit requests.
*
Develop, maintain, and improve complex financial spreadsheets and reporting tools.
*
Analyze financial data to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for process improvements.
*
Partner with internal departments to improve financial controls and reporting processes.
*
Assist with special projects, financial analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
*
Ensure documentation and accounting procedures remain accurate and up to date.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
*
Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
*
Minimum 2 years of full-cycle accounting experience.
*
Experience working within a mid-sized or large organization.
Strong understanding of Canadian accounting principles.
Experience working in a complex accounting environment.
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including:
*
Pivot Tables
*
VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP
*
Complex formulas
*
Large data set manipulation
*
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
*
Strong attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines.
*
Demonstrated accountability, ownership, and a proactive work ethic.
*
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
*
Willingness to learn new systems and business processes.
Nice to Have
*
Progress toward or completion of a CPA designation.
*
Experience supporting audit activities.
*
Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar reporting tools.
*
SQL knowledge.
*
Experience with ERP or financial reporting systems.
*
Exposure to fuel-industry tax standards or regulatory reporting.
