About Us
Viking Reinforcing is a 20-year established and dynamic rebar fabrication yard located in beautiful Parksville, BC, on Vancouver Island. We fabricate and place reinforcing steel for projects across the Island, and we're growing.
About the Role
We're seeking an experienced Director of Operations to lead day-to-day project delivery, field logistics, and quality oversight. Reporting to the VP of Operations, you'll be the senior operational decision-maker - directing field foremen and placing crews across multiple sites, mentoring our Project Management team, Directing all aspects of Operations, Construction Coordination, Logistics and acting as the technical quality gatekeeper between estimating, detailing, fabrication, and field installation.
This is not a schedule-only PM role. We need a senior leader who can direct the field with credibility, catch drawing and bar list errors before they hit the shop or site, and build the processes that keep delivery accurate and profitable.
What You'll Do
- Act as the senior operational decision-maker below the VP - when priorities conflict across sites, you make the call
- Own scheduling, sequencing, mobilization, and priorities for field foremen, superintendents, and placing crews across all active projects, coordinating with yard and dispatch so the field has what it needs when it needs it
- Lead, mentor, and hold accountable the Project Management team - from project setup through closeout
- Serve as the technical quality gatekeeper: review structural drawings, shop drawings, placing drawings, bar lists, and release packages, catching scope, bar mark, quantity, and sequencing errors before fabrication or site release
- Coordinate external detailers - manage detailing quality, turnaround, revision control, and the feedback loop with field and fabrication
- Provide operational QC review of bids and estimates for accuracy, constructability, and realistic crew and equipment assumptions before commitment
- Manage commercial and delivery risk - RFIs, change orders, revision impacts, and schedule pressures that erode margin
- Build and enforce SOPs, review checklists, and approval gates that reduce rework, missed scope, and field disruption
- Be measured on results: crews sequenced and productive every day, fewer preventable errors, stronger project margins
- Work with our ISO-MR on our standards
What You Bring
- 5–10+ years in reinforcing steel or structural steel operations, project management, detailing, or technical review
- Strong experience with shop drawings, placing drawings, bar lists, fabrication coordination, and field installation
- Experience directing field crews and setting priorities across multiple active sites
- Experience leading or mentoring Project Managers or project staff
- A proven quality-assurance mindset - you catch mistakes others miss
- Nice to have: aSaHQ or AutoCAD experience, field placing knowledge, BC construction market familiarity
