A global insurance organization based in Toronto is looking for an experienced Senior TypeScript Developer with strong hands-on experience building complex, rules-based and calculation-intensive applications. Insurance-domain experience—particularly experience implementing insurance rating engines and premium-calculation logic—is strongly preferred but not mandatory. Candidates with transferable experience developing pricing engines, rules engines, financial calculations, or similar complex calculation solutions will also be considered.
This is a hybrid position requiring the successful candidate to work onsite in downtown Toronto three days per week.
The successful candidate will design, develop, test, and maintain TypeScript-based rating applications and services. This role will work closely with actuarial, underwriting, business analysis, architecture, and delivery teams to translate complex rating specifications into accurate, maintainable technical solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain insurance rating applications and services using TypeScript.
- Translate actuarial specifications, rating algorithms, rate tables, and underwriting rules into accurate and maintainable TypeScript code.
- Implement rating factors such as coverages, classes, territories, exposures, limits, deductibles, modifiers, discounts, surcharges, minimum premiums, taxes, and fees.
- Develop strongly typed, modular, reusable, and testable application components.
- Implement complex business rules, decision logic, and premium-calculation functionality.
- Work closely with actuaries, underwriters, business analysts, and product owners to understand and implement rating requirements.
- Integrate rating functionality with policy administration, broker, billing, document-management, and third-party systems.
- Investigate rating discrepancies and reconcile calculated premiums against actuarial specifications and expected results.
- Develop comprehensive unit, integration, API, regression, and rating-scenario tests.
- Perform impact analysis for rate changes, new insurance products, underwriting-rule changes, and regulatory updates.
- Participate in solution design, code reviews, release planning, deployment, and production support.
- Maintain rating specifications, technical documentation, API documentation, data mappings, and implementation notes.
- Follow TypeScript coding standards, secure-development practices, source-control processes, and CI/CD requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
- 5+ years of enterprise software-development experience.
- Strong hands-on experience developing production applications using TypeScript.
- Advanced understanding of TypeScript, including type safety, interfaces, generics, modules, asynchronous programming, reusable components, and error handling.
- Experience implementing complex business rules and calculation logic using TypeScript.
- Hands-on insurance-domain experience involving rating engines, rating applications, or premium-calculation solutions.
- Demonstrated experience translating actuarial specifications, rate tables, underwriting rules, discounts, surcharges, and modifiers into application code.
- Strong understanding of insurance concepts, including quotes, policies, coverages, risks, exposures, premiums, endorsements, renewals, cancellations, and mid-term adjustments.
- Experience developing service-based applications, REST APIs, and system integrations using TypeScript.
- Experience designing modular and maintainable applications using appropriate design patterns.
- Experience developing automated unit, integration, API, and rating-scenario tests.
- Strong SQL and relational-database experience.
- Experience with Git, pull requests, branching strategies, code reviews, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, particularly when investigating premium-calculation discrepancies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with technical, actuarial, underwriting, and business stakeholders.
