The Opportunity
We're looking for a senior developer with strong expertise on the backend and can hold their own across the full stack. Our primary stack is Node and React, however some projects will require us to adapt to different technologies and many of our projects are data-heavy. You'll work across several client engagements at a time, on projects of varying sizes, sometimes alongside a client's own dev team.
This is an ideal role for someone who isn't limited by specific languages or tools, knows how to keep systems fast, scalable, and clean, and loves solving real-world problems with code.
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and maintain backend services for data-heavy client projects
- Contribute across the full stack (React) when projects need it
- Handle DevOps fundamentals independently - AWS/cloud setup, deployments, and monitoring without hand-holding
- Work across 2–3 concurrent client engagements, adapting to different stacks, stages, and team structures
- Collaborate with client dev teams when projects call for it
- Build with compliance and security in mind, especially in healthcare and banking contexts
- Use AI tools actively to accelerate your development - and apply secure AI practices.
- Flag risks, ask the questions others don't, and propose practical solutions
Required Skills
- 5–10 years of backend development experience, primarily with Node.js
- Proficiency with React and TypeScript; solid JavaScript and asynchronous programming
- Strong knowledge of Express.js, NestJS, or similar Node.js frameworks
- Proven track record designing & maintaining RESTful APIs and GraphQL services
- Expertise with microservices and serverless architectures
- Hands-on experience with modern databases (MongoDB, PostgreSQL, etc.) and data-heavy applications
- Familiarity with ORMs like Mongoose, Sequelize, or Prisma
- Strong background in authentication and authorization (JWT, OAuth, etc.)
- Experience with DevOps fundamentals, server setup, deployments, and monitoring - including AWS/cloud setup, you can run independently
- Compliance and security awareness (data handling, secure architecture)
- Ability to write modular, reusable, well-documented code
- Comfortable collaborating with frontend and mobile teams to align API requirements
- Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Comfortable with Git, pull requests, and code review workflows
- Active use of AI tools in your development workflow, with an understanding of secure AI practices
- Experience across a variety of companies and project types - comfortable where processes aren't predetermined
- Ability to understand and reason through system diagrams, API schemas, and architecture decisions
Nice to Have
- Exposure to C#, PHP, or mobile development
- Deep knowledge of message queues (RabbitMQ, Redis, AWS SQS)
- Advanced caching strategies and performance tuning expertise
- Experience setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
- Experience in healthcare, banking, or other regulated environments
- Background in startups, SaaS, or high-velocity product environments
