Sturgeon Public Schools is seeking a Part-Time Temporary Indigenous Learning Coach to work with the Education Services team and directly in schools with teachers, students, and their respective communities. The Indigenous Learning Coach will work to reduce any barriers to achievement for Indigenous students and naturalize Indigenous knowledge and understanding into every grade level through a collaborative, solution-focused perspective. This position will focus on the knowledge and understanding of the history and culture of the many First Nations in Canada.
Sturgeon Public Schools serves the needs of approximately 5,200 students in 17 schools. Throughout Sturgeon Public Schools, we work very hard to create safe, caring, and inclusive learning environments. Our schools work with parents and community members to implement innovative programs and strategies that support the success of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) students, and benefit the entire school community.
The Morinville Learning Centre, located at Sturgeon Public Schools’ Central Office, supports students in Grades K–12 who require individualized tutoring, upgrading, or the opportunity to repeat courses. Programming is flexible, with attendance and pacing designed around each student’s unique needs.
The Sturgeon Learning Centre, located in Gibbons, is an alternative high school serving students in Grades K–12. Students earn credits through a personalized approach that includes in-person instruction, one-on-one support, and remote learning using Google Meet, email, and phone communication.
What You’ll Be Doing
Have a passion and commitment for Indigenous Education, truth and reconciliation.
Work alongside K-12 colleagues to naturalize Indigenous knowledge and understanding into every grade level and subject area.
Reduce barriers to achievement for Indigenous students in schools through a collaborative solution-focused perspective.
Facilitate Indigenous cultural awareness for students and staff through guest speakers, presentations in classrooms and staff professional development.
Work to create culturally responsive schools, ensuring that Indigenous students see culture represented within their schools.
Establish trusting relationships with students and parents with clear, open communication between schools and Indigenous families and communities.
Support engagement of our Indigenous communities in our schools via community engagement evenings, community visits, Elders on Campus, and smudging spaces.
What You Bring
A valid Alberta Teaching Certificate.
Completion of Indigenous studies or related coursework would be an asset.
Experience with and demonstrated knowledge of local Indigenous heritage and cultures, and the ability to mentor and provide professional development for educators.
Knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity of the effects and impacts of historical educational experiences of Indigenous peoples, including transgenerational trauma.
Ability to cultivate and nurture positive relationships with parents, learners, teachers, support staff, and families of Indigenous ancestry.
Ability to consult with Indigenous community members, including parents/caregivers, and Sturgeon Public School staff to support advocacy of Indigenous learners.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in diverse classroom settings and with various age groups – Grades K-12.
