The Houpsitas Summer Program provides a safe, engaging, and culturally grounded summer experience for Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che'tles7et'h' First Nations children and youth. Through recreation, cultural activities, language learning, land-based education, and community involvement, the program supports participants in building connections to culture, community, and the natural environment.
As a Summer Program Facilitator (SPF), you will help create memorable summer experiences for children and youth by planning and leading fun, educational, and culturally meaningful activities. Working alongside Elders, community members, and program leadership, you will support participants through outdoor adventures, cultural learning opportunities, recreational programming, and special events.
Please Note: This position is based in Kyuquot (Houpsitas), BC and requires the successful candidate to reside in the community for the duration of employment. Housing is not provided.
The duties/tasks/responsibilities of the SPF include (but are not limited to):
- Plan and facilitate engaging activities for children and youth throughout the summer program
- Support cultural learning opportunities, including language activities, storytelling, drumming, singing, arts, and crafts
- Lead recreational, wellness, and outdoor activities that encourage participation and positive social development
- Assist with land-based learning experiences such as fishing, hiking, marine exploration, community gardening, and environmental stewardship activities
- Organize and support outings, field trips, and special events
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for all participants
- Collaborate with Elders, youth, and community members to enrich program experiences
- Monitor participant safety and respond appropriately to incidents or emergencies
- Maintain attendance records and assist with program documentation and activity summaries
- Help keep program spaces, equipment, and supplies organized and well maintained
- Participate in program planning, training, and evaluation activities
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 diploma
- Experience working with children and youth is an asset
- Experience in recreation, education, child and youth care, early childhood education, social services, or related fields is an asset
- Experience working with First Nations communities is an asset
- Knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth culture, language, protocols, and customs is an asset
- Experience facilitating group activities is beneficial
- First Aid & CPR-C certification is an asset
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace, and related technology
