The Faculty of Continuing Education at Mount Royal University invites applications for a credit-free contract instructor.
Mount Royal University has provided continuing education to the Calgary community and beyond for more than 60 years. We offer more than 1,000 courses and 100 certificate and diploma programs, and have more than 50,000 course registrations each year. Our courses cover a wide range of sectors, including but not limited to social services, business, and health. These courses are offered in a variety of formats on campus, online, in the workplace, and in the community.
The Personal Fitness Trainer diploma program offers a comprehensive health science education with an emphasis on special populations. The curriculum consists of academic and technical courses and was designed to meet the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology - Certified Personal Trainer national certification.
The department is seeking an instructor with the ability to teach the following course part-time in the Fall 2026 semester:
Students will acquire the skills to conduct a fitness and lifestyle appraisal and develop strategies that assist clients with healthy lifestyle changes based on their individual needs, goals and motivation. This course will be based on the Physical Activity Training for Health (PATH) protocol as outlined by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) and prepares students for the Certified Personal Trainer (CSEP-CPT) certification examinations.
- Tuesdays & Thursdays (September 3, 2026 - December 3, 2026)
- Final Exam: Thursday, December 17, 2026
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
- Identify the history of fitness appraisal in Canada
- Explain the relationship between lifestyle habits and health
- Understand the models of behavior change, to be able to apply motivational interviewing to clients and use it to assist them in changing their lifestyle habits
- Utilize the five step CSEP-PATH client-centered process to conduct fitness and lifestyle appraisals
- Identify the CSEP-PATH tools and resources
- Conduct a fitness and lifestyle appraisal using the CSEP-PATH protocol
- Develop advanced fitness and lifestyle counseling skills
- Be prepared to complete the national CSEP-CPT examinations
The instructor is responsible for instruction using the approved curriculum, implementation of applicable curriculum assessment measures, and marking and submitting final course grades. The instructor will also be required to maintain regular contact with the administration team and adhere to program policies and deadlines. Students in this class are part of the Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma Program.
Instruction:
- Lesson preparation
- Course delivery

- Course delivery using approved curriculum and learning materials
- Review and revision of course assessments
Administration:
- Marking and submission of course grades
- Maintaining regular contact with the program administrative team
- Participating in virtual instructor meetings and individual meetings with the program coordinator as required
- Participating in meetings and adhering to program policies and deadlines
- Master’s degree in Health Science, Kinesiology or related field required, completed PhD an asset
- Experience with CSEP-CPT
- 3-5 years of applicable professional experience
- Working knowledge of copyright and APA citation
- Excellent presentation, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
- Minimum two years of instructional experience in an adult education environment
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Self-motivated and self-directed
- Proficiency with Google Workspace
- Proficiency with the D2L learning management system is an asset
