Springwater Township Public Library is an award-winning library with three branches (Elmvale, Midhurst, and Minesing) in the Township of Springwater, in the centre of Simcoe County. Springwater is a mix or rural and urban areas with a population of approximately 23,000 residents. The Library prides itself on offering outstanding customer service while providing information and entertainment to Springwater residents. Our physical branches offer a wide range of materials and programs and our robust digital branch consists of our website, social media platforms, online resources, e-books, and virtual programs.
The Library is looking for a flexible, customer service-oriented person for the position of Library Technician 1. This position includes the role of courier which delivers materials to all branches twice a week. The courier hours are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and circulation hours are on Tuesdays, some Saturdays, and the potential for further hours as call-in. This position includes evenings plus Saturdays.
Reporting to the Manager of Public Services/Deputy CEO, the Library Technician 1 will be responsible for public circulation duties and assisting with programs. The incumbent will also assist clients with general reference questions and reader’s advisory. Responsibilities primarily consist of but are not limited to those below:
- Performs routine circulation duties, which include checking materials in and out, taking requests for materials not in the collection, collecting fines and fees, registering and updating members.
- Delivers programming materials and library equipment to all branch locations.
- Delivers Township and library documents to library and Township locations.
- Provides basic reference service in answering questions and demonstrating use of the library catalogue and guidance in the selection of library materials.
- Assists with programs.
- Sort requested material at branches for delivery.
- Maintains the confidentiality and security of all materials being delivered and picked up.
- Assists with communications and marketing.
- Shelves materials.
- Assists patrons with technology questions both on their devices and library computers.
- Deals with the public in a courteous and efficient manner to promote a high standard of public relations at all times.
- Minimum Completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
- Community College Diploma in a related discipline preferred, Library Technician Diploma is an asset.
- Previous library experience is preferred.
- A driver’s license and a driver’s abstract are required.
- Previous experience working with children is preferred.
- Working knowledge of the internet, computer hardware, software, and tablets or devices is required.
- Self-motivated and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must possess effective communication skills to provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to maintain discretion and a high degree of confidentiality of information is critical.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including Saturdays and some evenings.
- Access to a vehicle for the courier duties is required. Mileage will be paid.
- Must adhere to the Highway Traffic Act and all safety legislation and requirements.
- Must be able to work at any branch location (Elmvale, Midhurst, Minesing); this position will require travel between all three branches of the Springwater Public Library.
- As a condition of employment, all applicants must be willing to submit a Criminal Records Search - Vulnerable Sector Screening that is acceptable and in good standing to the Springwater Public Library.
The rate of pay for this position is $27.80 per hour (2026 rate) as per the Collective Agreement, with the option to participate in the OMERS pension plan.
This position has an anticipated start date beginning in July. Hours will vary from week to week and may be a combination of both scheduled and call-in. Average weekly hours are between four (4) to twenty (20) hours per week.
