Job Summary
The Welder/Fitter is responsible for fabricating, fitting, welding, and assembling metal components and finished products in accordance with company drawings, specifications, quality standards, and production schedules. This position plays a critical role in supporting production operations by ensuring work is completed accurately, efficiently, and safely.
The successful candidate will be a skilled tradesperson with strong fabrication and welding experience, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Schedule
Day Shift
- Monday to Thursday: 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Friday: 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM
- Overtime may be required based on production needs.
Night Shift
- Monday to Thursday: 5:30 PM to 4:00 AM
- Overtime may be required based on production needs.
- Shift premiums are available for employees working the night shift.
Key Responsibilities
Fabrication & Welding
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, shop drawings, work orders, and fabrication specifications.
- Fit, assemble, tack, and weld components according to drawings and project requirements.
- Perform MIG welding on structural steel, sheet metal, and fabricated assemblies.
- Verify material requirements and ensure components are prepared for fabrication and assembly.
- Operate fabrication equipment including plasma cutters, grinders, drill presses, press brakes, and other shop machinery.
- Ensure completed weldments meet dimensional, structural, and cosmetic quality requirements.
- Prepare and finish welded components as required for downstream operations.
- Assist with assembly and finishing operations as needed to support production requirements.
Production & Workflow
- Complete assigned work orders and production tasks within established timelines.
- Maintain productivity while ensuring quality standards are consistently achieved.
- Work closely with Supervisors and team members to support production goals.
- Communicate production concerns, material shortages, and quality issues as they arise.
- Support efficient workflow between fabrication, welding and assembly departments.
- Ensure completed jobs are properly identified, organized, and staged for the next operation.
- Assist in identifying production bottlenecks and opportunities for process improvement.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Perform inspections throughout the fabrication and welding process to ensure compliance with drawings and specifications.
- Use measuring instruments including tape measures, squares, calipers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances.
- Identify and report quality concerns, defects, or non-conforming materials.
- Maintain high workmanship standards and take corrective action when necessary.
- Contribute ideas and recommendations that improve productivity, efficiency, quality, and safety.
- Support company quality initiatives and established manufacturing procedures.
Material Handling & General Shop Duties
- Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and material-handling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist with loading, unloading, moving, and staging materials throughout the facility.
- Perform basic equipment inspections and routine maintenance tasks as required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.
- Support other fabrication and production activities as required.
Safety
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Wear required PPE at all times.
- Operate equipment safely and report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses.
- Maintain compliance with OHSA requirements and company safety standards.
- Promote a positive safety culture through safe work habits and accountability.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of welding and fabrication experience in a manufacturing, structural steel, or metal fabrication environment.
- Proficiency in MIG welding and fitting fabricated components.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
- Experience operating fabrication equipment including grinders, plasma cutters, drill presses, and press brakes.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of fabrication processes.
- Experience using measuring tools and inspection equipment accurately.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Effective problem-solving and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Forklift and overhead crane experience is considered an asset (or willingness to become certified).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding work.
Work Environment
- Industrial manufacturing environment with moderate to high noise levels.
- Exposure to welding fumes, sparks, moving machinery, sharp metal edges, dust, and metal debris.
- Standing, bending, walking, lifting, and repetitive physical movement required throughout the shift.
- Work performed in close proximity to fabrication, welding, and material-handling equipment.
