Sqwá First Nation – Bus Driver (Casual, On-Call)
Sqwá First Nation is seeking a responsible and compassionate Bus Driver to safely transport passengers—primarily Elders—to and from community events and trips while maintaining strict compliance with all safety regulations and First Nations community protocols.
The successful candidate will demonstrate patience, empathy, and professionalism, while providing a safe, respectful, and supportive transportation experience for all passengers.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesPassenger Transport & Safety
- Safely transport Elders and community members to/from events and trips.
- Provide attentive care and ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers.
- Enforce seating policies (right-side loading/unloading only).
- Implement bus evacuation procedures when required.
- Support with community trips and events (seasonal variations).
- Adapt routes based on special events and community needs.
Vehicle Maintenance & Compliance
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections (lights, tires, emergency exits) in accordance with MVAC Sec. 11.09.
- Perform weekly deep cleaning and disinfecting of the bus (MVAC Sec. 11.10).
- Complete monthly vehicle wash (per diem provided).
- Maintain fuel logs and submit receipts monthly.
- Report all incidents promptly.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain accurate attendance and passenger tracking.
- Demonstrate excellent radio and cell phone communication.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with Sqwá First Nation policies and procedures.
Other Responsibilities
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Education and Elders.
- Provide back-up support within the department or across departments as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Valid BC Class 2 Driver’s License with School Bus Endorsement (required).
- Minimum Class 4 License (unrestricted).
- Completion of a School District Bus Driving Course (required).
- Minimum 5+ years of commercial driving experience (school bus experience preferred).
- Current Emergency Child Care First Aid Certification.
- Knowledge of and compliance with Motor Vehicle Act Sections 11.09/11.10.
- Strong ability to demonstrate patience, empathy, and kindness with multi-age riders.
- Experience in crisis management (e.g., evacuations, emergency situations).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in attendance tracking.
- Excellent communication skills (radio and mobile).
- Ability to work flexible and split shifts.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Assets
- Knowledge, respect, and understanding of Stó:lō culture, traditions, and language.
- Experience working within a First Nations community.
Compensation & Work Schedule
- Hourly Rate: $30.00 per hour
- Status: Casual, On-Call
- Schedule: Hours vary based on events and community needs
