Mechanical Engineer – HVAC & Fire Protection
Pay Rate: Up to $62.15-77.66/hour, depending on experience
Contract Length: 1 Year (July 28, 2026 – July 30, 2027)
Location: Burnaby, British Columbia (Hybrid)
Raise is currently hiring a Mechanical Engineer – HVAC & Fire Protection on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their engineering team to support growing capital projects and operations, making this a unique opportunity to work with one of Canada's largest electrical energy suppliers.
Note: The primary pay rate is based on the rate for an incorporated contractor who owns their own business. However, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in a T4 arrangement, where applicable.
Description
The Mechanical Engineer will provide engineering expertise in the design, analysis, planning, and delivery of HVAC and Fire Protection systems for generating station projects and operations. This role combines engineering leadership with hands-on design work, supporting medium-complexity projects while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, within budget, and in compliance with engineering standards. The successful candidate will also provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering team members while supporting client's engineering practice.
Responsibilities
Engineering & Project Delivery

Develop safe, reliable mechanical engineering solutions for HVAC and Fire Protection systems supporting generating station projects.

Perform engineering calculations, technical analysis, and interpretation of engineering specifications.

Resolve complex engineering and field issues through independent investigation, technical evaluation, and sound engineering judgment.

Support project and operations teams by preparing estimates, reviewing contractor deliverables, monitoring project progress, coordinating schedules, and recommending improvements.

Conduct engineering studies and contribute to the development of engineering standards, procedures, and best practices.

Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior engineers and project teams.

Perform periodic site inspections, construction quality reviews, and field engineering support to ensure design compliance.
Drafting, Design & Documentation

Develop, revise, and maintain 2D and 3D engineering drawings for station mechanical systems.

Produce facility layouts, equipment arrangements, and detailed mechanical installation drawings.

Utilize AutoCAD and other CADD applications to develop engineering deliverables in accordance with client's drafting standards.

Manage engineering drawings using computerized document management systems.

Support site preparation, construction activities, and integration of mechanical systems with electrical infrastructure.

Prepare technical reports, calculations, engineering documentation, and project records.
Qualifications

Minimum 4 years of mechanical engineering experience, with demonstrated experience in HVAC and Fire Protection systems.

Experience designing mechanical systems for utilities, power generation, industrial facilities, or other regulated environments.

Strong working knowledge of HVAC and Fire Protection codes, standards, and engineering practices.

Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD.

Experience using standard mechanical engineering analysis and design software.

Familiarity with CAD standards and engineering drawing development.

Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

Excellent organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
Preferred Skills
-
Experience specifying and designing Diesel Generator (Genset) systems.

Experience using Autodesk Revit and/or Autodesk Inventor for 3D modeling and parametric design.

Previous utility or power generation experience.

Experience working on generating station projects.

Successful completion of, or progress toward, the Electrical System introductory course.
Education & Certifications
-
University degree in Engineering or Applied Science.

Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for registration.

Must provide proof of an active Permit to Practice through EGBC prior to assignment.

Familiarity with client's Digital Sign and Seal Technology (Notarius) is considered an asset.
Work Environment
-
Hybrid work arrangement with a minimum of 3 days per week in the Burnaby (Edmonds) office during the first three months, transitioning to 2 days per week thereafter.

Travel to client's generating stations throughout British Columbia approximately once every two months for 1–2 day site visits.

Comfortable traveling to remote locations, including travel via regional airports and small aircraft when required.

Contractors must provide their own Windows 11 laptop and smartphone for the duration of the assignment.
