About the Role
The Asset HSSE Investigation and Learning Focal leads the development, execution, and continuous improvement of LNG Canada’s investigation and learning program. This role requires a seasoned investigator who can bring rigor, clarity, and operational credibility to how incidents are investigated, communicated, and converted into sustained improvement.
The successful candidate will be expected to strengthen investigation quality, coach leaders and frontline teams, improve consistency in root cause analysis, and ensure lessons learned are embedded into everyday operations, not left as reports. This is a high-impact role for someone who can connect technical investigation discipline with practical field execution, leadership accountability, and measurable HSSE performance improvement.

You will use your expertise to:
- Maintain and continuously improve the LNG Canada Incident investigation process and practices.
- Shape the life cycle of incident management that will effectively communicate and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
- Ensure that HSSE incidents are investigated in line with the LNGC incident investigation process and effective corrective actions are implemented.
- Follow up to ensure timely and accurate reporting to regulatory bodies, retention of documents and assurance (e.g. WorkSafeBC, TechSafeBC, Transport Canada, BCER etc.).
- Promote and support the awareness on incident reporting, and use of the Causal Learning methodology throughout the business.
- Utilize the Causal Learning methodology to support and facilitate varying levels of HSSE incident investigations and other reviews.
- Co-maintain a group of Causal Learning facilitators within LNGC. Manage the HSSE Incident Investigation & Learning Competency Development Framework with Learning & Development to maintain a pool of Level 1 and Level 2 investigation facilitators.
- Develop and implement an Improvement Plan for Incident Investigation and Learning for the LNGC business that is aligned with the existing strategy and guidance.
- Assess and measure the quality and effectiveness of the Incident Investigation and Learning processes and materials and support the business to address the gaps.
- Support assurance and process effectiveness activities on HSSE investigation and learning, including monitoring and assurance of Level 1 and 2 investigations.
- Embed learning from incidents and events by working with relevant stakeholders and the broader Incident Investigation and Learning network.
- Support LNGC Leadership to comply with the HSSE Control Framework Incident Investigation and Learning Manual
- Implement changes to the HSSE Control Framework and incorporate changes into applicable LNGC procedures and processes.
- Develop and grow skills of HSSE and Line Managers in delivering Learnings from Incidents and messages. Maintain an effective network that is motivated to reduce repeat incidents.
- Analyze incident data, identify trends, failed barriers, and behaviors. Work closely with the line managers to address weaknesses in implementation of Control Framework requirements in Significant and High Potentials events.
- Support or lead the development of high-quality Reflective Learning materials and alerts from investigations for learning purposes, where applicable.
- Support the Asset by coaching users on the LNGC incident management system (Reporting, Monitoring, and Quality Control on the Incident Management system).
- Support the Reliability team with guidance on Reporting and Monitoring, as per the Incident Management system.
- Align and challenge teams on incidents Risk Ranking methodology to maintain consistency within the Asset.
- Interact with various levels of leadership within LNGC and our Contractor groups to provide coaching and mentorship in the Incident Investigation and Learning space.
- Collaborate closely with and lead by influence, a group of non-HSSE professionals as LNGC Causal Learning facilitators.
- Communicate with representatives in Investigation and learning networks.
- Work closely with LNGC's HSSE Systems team and site personnel to analyze HSSE data, identify trends, failed barriers, human performance failures, systemic failures and improvement opportunities.
- Collaborate with LNGC Communications team to ensure compliance with LNGC's communications strategy and branding policies.
To be successful, you will have:
- An analytical mindset that maintains a curiosity for learning without jumping to conclusions
- A solid foundation of the incident management life cycle
- Expertise in the field of HSSE; investigations (HSSE incidents and/or reliability events) and Learning from Incidents
- 5-10 years HSSE Experience in industrial, petro chemical or large projects.
- Demonstrated experience coaching employees and leaders
- Ability to function in a fast-paced.
- Ability to challenge and coach (senior) Leadership, enabling leaders to understand how to improve performance
- Ability to lead through influence.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred:
- Skilled in applying the Causal Learning Methodology and proven success in facilitation of several Causal Learning investigations of varying complexity. Awareness of other HSSE investigation methodologies considered an asset.
- Barrier Analysis and Human Performance Analysis as part of an incident investigation
- Knowledge of the Learning aspect for Significant incidents/selected for high value learning, e.g., HPIs.
- Skilled in implementation and facilitation of Learning From Incidents and Reflective Learning processes.
- Strong passion for HSE, drive to build and change HSE culture.
- Knowledge, within HSSE Control Framework, including Safety Management Systems development and implementation.
- Demonstration of the ability to implement HSSE Management Systems.
- Role-model as Learner Mindset and support leaning as a deliberate improvement strategy.
- Help foster psychological safety for the Asset.
- Demonstrated core values of Honesty, Integrity and Respect.
This role requires that you:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada (i.e., by way of Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or valid work permit)
- Live in the beautiful District of Stikine (Kitimat/Terrace). For applicants located outside of the region, you are encouraged to explore what Kitimat has to offer in terms of lifestyle including schooling, local amenities, outdoor adventure, and housing, to ensure Kitimat is where you would like to call your new home.
- Capable of working 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday
- Are willing to work outdoors during inclement weather in all seasons including heavy snowfall and periods of heavy rain.
- Can climb ladders and stairs, work at heights and in confined spaces. Plant design conditions provide structures that are significantly taller than common in industry, individuals must be comfortable with heights
- Are willing to comply with LNGC’s drug-free and harassment-free work environment and comply with all safety policies and procedures.
- Undergo a pre-placement medical assessment of your fitness for duty, a background check and Pre-Site Access testing for alcohol and specified drugs.
- Have a Valid Driver’s license
- Know that this is not a fly-in, fly-out rotation role.
