Basketball Instructor (After-School Program)
Location: Burnaby School District (SD41), British Columbia
Position Type: Part-Time, Contract
Schedule: Weekday afternoons (3:00–4:00 PM or 4:00–5:00 PM), 1–2 days/week
Compensation: $30–$35 per hour (based on experience)
About Mindora Learning
Mindora Learning provides engaging after-school enrichment programs for children in Grades K–7 across Burnaby schools. Our programs focus on science, arts, music, sport, and personal development — always delivered in an inclusive, child-centred environment.
About the Role
As a Basketball Instructor, you will deliver high-energy, skill-progressive basketball sessions for children ages 5–12 (Grades K–7) using Jr. NBA foundational principles. Complete beginners are warmly welcomed. Younger children (K–2) use age-appropriate balls and lowered hoops to build fundamental movement skills through basketball play; older children (Gr 3–7) develop real technique, court awareness, and game application through focused drills and small-sided 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 games. Personal progress — not ranking against peers — is the only scorecard that matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver basketball sessions for a mixed-age K–7 group using Jr. NBA foundational principles, differentiated by developmental level.
- Deliver K–2 sessions with age-appropriate equipment (smaller balls, lowered hoops) focused on fundamental movement skills through basketball-based play.
- Deliver Gr 3–7 sessions developing real technique, court awareness, and ability to apply skills in small-sided game situations.
- Structure every session across four blocks: ball-handling warm-up, focused skill practice, small-sided game time, and cool-down reflection.
- Teach dribbling (both hands, direction changes, eyes up), passing (chest, bounce, overhead), shooting (BEEF: Balance, Eyes, Elbow, Follow-through), defensive stance and footwork, and court awareness.
- Run progressive skill drills targeting one or two skills per session, using personal-best framing — never ranking children against each other.
- Facilitate 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 modified game situations with maximum participation — every child with the ball, every child contributing.
- Lead the cool-down reflection: stretching, a session highlight, and one skill each child will focus on next time — building self-awareness and intrinsic motivation.
- Maintain and set up age-appropriate basketball equipment (balls, adjustable hoops) for each session.
- Communicate regularly with the Program Coordinator regarding student progress, skill development, and program outcomes.
- Follow all Burnaby School District policies, safety procedures, and child-safeguarding requirements.
Qualifications
Required
- Degree, diploma, certificate, or equivalent experience in Kinesiology, Physical Education, Sport Coaching, Recreation, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with children ages 5–12 in educational, camp, after-school, or sport settings.
- Demonstrated experience coaching or instructing basketball or comparable sports to children.
- Solid knowledge of basketball fundamentals: dribbling, passing, shooting (including BEEF technique), defence, and court awareness.
- Ability to differentiate skill activities and equipment for K–2 and Gr 3–7 within a single mixed-age session.
- Commitment to a personal-progress model — framing all skill development around individual improvement, not peer comparison.
- Ability to run modified small-sided games that maximise every child’s active participation and ball touches.
- Energetic, positive coaching style with strong facilitation and behaviour management skills for active indoor group settings.
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Emergency First Aid & CPR Certification (or willingness to obtain before start date).
Preferred
- Canada Basketball coaching certification or equivalent.
- Familiarity with Jr. NBA programming principles and age-appropriate basketball development frameworks.
- Experience delivering basketball or sport programs within an OST or after-school context.
- Experience working with children who are complete beginners to the sport.
- Familiarity with long-term athlete development (LTAD) or sport-based youth development (SBYD) frameworks.
Why Join Mindora?

- Flexible part-time schedule — 1–2 afternoons per week.
- Opportunity to deliver one of Canada’s fastest-growing youth sports with real developmental impact.
- Supportive and collaborative team environment.
- All basketball equipment (age-appropriate balls, adjustable hoops) and curriculum resources provided.
