Organizational Background: Parkwood Seniors Community is a not-for-profit, charitable, faith-based Continuum of Care located in Waterloo (corner of University Ave and New Hampshire St) supported by 23 Mennonite and Brethren in Christ Congregations. It is one of two campuses of Fairview Parkwood Communities.
The vibrant Parkwood campus offers more than a housing solution. It has been purposefully designed and expanded to create a sense of community for older adults where all are welcome.
Parkwood Mennonite Home, where the role is based, is a Long-Term Care Home which cares for 96 residents. This role also oversees recreation programming across the campus including; Long-term Care, Retirement Suites, Independent Living and Health & Wellness Centre.
Position Summary: Parkwood Seniors Community is seeking a dynamic and passionate Kinesiologist, Pool Lead to facilitate the development and implementation of engaging, person-centered therapeutic programs for our Health and Wellness Centre. This role promotes a positive quality of life for older adults by fostering a stimulating, inclusive, and supportive environment that promotes social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and physical well-being.
They will collaborate with residents, members and interdisciplinary team members to create meaningful experiences that enhance daily living.
Reports to: Director of Programs
Position Specific Responsibilities:
Include, but not limited to, the following:
Adhere to all written policies and procedures of the Home
Perform all tasks with an acceptable standard of skill and sense of responsibility
Work safely, following the Safety Guidelines, as posted
Follow WHMIS 2015, fire safety, and emergency plan procedures
Attend meetings, training and in-services
Follow infection prevention and control procedures, as per best practice guidelines
Keep work area clean and tidy
Report any immediate or potential hazards to the department director, or designate
Assist in developing the monthly program calendar for designated area
Provides safe, supervised warm water therapeutic aquatic exercise programs and guidance to pool participants including, water fitness classes
Testing of pool water; pool maintenance (chemicals, cleaning, document)
Supports and motivates residents to achieve their health and fitness goals
Supervise participants in the exercise room and fitness centre
Lead individual and group exercise classes
Maintain participant files, including monitoring and tracking attendance, exercise progress and health changes
Assist participants with transfers and equipment for safe use of the facilities
Develop, implement, evaluate and modify programs, as required
Skills and Qualifications:
Experience working with seniors with complex, age-related diseases and/or mental health concerns
Post-secondary diploma in Kinesiology
Aqua Ability Certification
Bronze Cross Certification
First Aid/CPR/AED training
Seniors Fitness Instructor
Patient Safety Roles and Responsibilities
All staff are responsible for identifying incidents and for taking immediate action to ensure the safety of residents, visitors and other staff. Open disclosure must occur when a resident safety incident happens, regardless of whether it is unplanned, unintended or a circumstance that could have resulted or did result in unnecessary harm to a resident. Data and feedback from staff, residents, families and partners can identify system vulnerabilities to inform quality improvement efforts.
Shift Information: Part-time hours 40 hours bi-weekly. This position includes day, evening and/or weekend work as well as statutory holidays.
