Reports To
BIM Coordinator / BIM Manager / Lead Engineer
Job Purpose
The BIM Modeller is responsible for developing, managing, and coordinating detailed 3D models for the light rail project. The role supports design development, multidisciplinary coordination, drawing production, and data compliance in accordance with project BIM standards, client requirements, and delivery milestones.
Missions/Main Duties:
- Civil 3D Modeling: Develop comprehensive 3D models for underground dry and wet utility networks (storm drainage, sanitary sewers, water distribution, culverts, tanks, and catch basins), as well as roadways, grading, surfaces, pavements, alignments, profiles, assemblies, and corridors.
-
Data Management: Create and manage data shortcuts and drawing references across multi-user environments using Autodesk Construction Cloud and Autodesk Desktop Connector.
-
Design Collaboration: Coordinate with civil, utility, and roadway engineers to model existing, staged, and proposed site servicing, grading, and drainage designs.
-
Documentation & Deliverables: Generate accurate plan, profile, and cross-section model and sheet files for design, construction, and regulatory submissions.
-
Customization & Standards: Set up and customize object styles, label styles, pipe network styles, part lists, and sheet sets to meet project-specific requirements.
-
Interdisciplinary Coordination: Conduct clash detection and coordination reviews across disciplines (utilities, drainage, grading, pavements, subgrade conditions, foundations, and electrical duct banks).
-
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure models adhere to municipal infrastructure standards, provincial guidelines, Transport Canada, ICAO Annex 14, OPSD, and other applicable codes.
-
Model Integrity: Maintain up-to-date models reflecting design revisions, construction phasing, and final turnover, including accurate representation of as-built conditions.
-
Workflow Optimization: Implement and improve BIM workflows, leveraging automation and scripting tools where appropriate.
Profile/Skills:
Required Qualifications
-
Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Geomatics, or a related field.
-
Minimum 5 years of experience in civil modeling (minimum 3 years of Civil 3D specifically), with proven expertise in both underground utilities and road/surface design.
-
Mandatory proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D (utilities, alignments, corridors, assemblies, surfaces, and data shortcuts), AutoCAD, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Autodesk Desktop Connector, and Bluebeam Revu.
-
Experience with advanced tools such as Dynamo for Civil 3D, InfraWorks, Navisworks Manage, Python scripting for automation, Bentley InRoads/OpenRoads, and Autodesk Inventor is a strong asset.
-
Demonstrated experience in modeling stormwater management systems, pressure and gravity-fed networks, and large-scale roadway and pavement infrastructure.
-
Skilled in integrating data from multiple sources (GIS, survey, as-built drawings) into coordinated BIM/CAD environments.
-
Knowledge of hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, stormwater and surface drainage, detention systems, and flood control compliance is an advantage.
-
Strong understanding of applicable Ontario and Canadian civil, road, and utility standards (OPSD, OTM Book 7, MOE/MTO guidelines, Transport Canada, ICAO).
-
Excellent coordination, documentation, and version control practices.
-
Self-directed, detail-oriented, and capable of managing priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
-
Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams.
