Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Accountant to join our growing CPA practice. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a diverse portfolio of clients, preparing and reviewing financial statements, corporate and personal tax returns, and leading compilation, review, and audit engagements. This role requires strong technical accounting and taxation knowledge, excellent analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work independently while mentoring junior staff.
The ideal candidate will possess a thorough understanding of Canadian Accounting Standards, Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS), and Canadian tax legislation.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review Compilation, Review Engagement, and Audit files in accordance with CPA Canada Standards.
- Plan, perform, and complete Review Engagements and assist with or lead Audit Engagements from planning through completion.
- Prepare and review year-end financial statements in accordance with ASPE and ASNPO, as applicable.
- Prepare and review corporate (T2), trust (T3), partnership, GST/HST, and other required tax returns.
- Prepare and review working paper files using CaseWare Working Papers and Jazzit Financials.
- Prepare tax returns and tax planning schedules using CanTax.
- Analyze financial information, investigate variances, and prepare supporting schedules and reports.
- Prepare and review adjusting journal entries, account reconciliations, and year-end working papers.
- Assist clients with accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, GST/HST, payroll remittances, and other compliance matters.
- Ensure compliance with CPA Canada standards, Income Tax Act requirements, and other applicable legislation.
- Assist with budgeting, cash flow analysis, forecasting, and financial planning engagements.
- Identify opportunities to improve clients' accounting systems and internal controls.
- Research accounting and taxation issues and provide practical recommendations to clients and management.
- Supervise, mentor, and review the work of junior accountants and accounting technicians.
- Maintain strong professional relationships with clients while delivering exceptional client service.
- Collaborate with partners and managers to meet engagement deadlines and firm objectives.
Qualifications
- CPA designation (or CPA candidate nearing completion) is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of public practice accounting experience in a Canadian CPA firm.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE)
- Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO)
- Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS)
- Canadian Income Tax Act
- Demonstrated experience preparing and completing:
- Compilation Engagements
- Review Engagements
- Audit Engagements
- Advanced proficiency with:
- CaseWare Working Papers
- Jazzit Financials
- CanTax
- Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or other cloud-based accounting software is considered an asset.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple engagements and consistently meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with owner-managed businesses, professional corporations, not-for-profit organizations, and charities.
- Experience supervising and mentoring staff.
- Experience dealing directly with CRA correspondence, tax reviews, and audits.
- Experience preparing complex tax returns and providing tax planning recommendations.

Pay: $58,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
