ROLE OVERVIEW
The Production Painter / General Labour is responsible for the professional spray painting of truck scale components, maintaining the paint booth to the highest standards of cleanliness and organization, and supporting the general upkeep of the production shop. The schedule alternates between painting days and non-painting days based on production requirements. On painting days, the employee is guaranteed a full 8-hour paid shift and may leave once all painting and end-of-day responsibilities are completed — there is no requirement to remain on premises until 8:00 pm if the work is done. On non-painting days, the employee works regular daytime hours alongside the production team. This role requires professionalism, self-discipline, and a strong sense of ownership over the booth and shop environment.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Paint Booth Operations — Painting Days
- Perform professional-grade industrial spray painting of truck scale components using established processes and approved coatings
- Painting operations may not commence before 3:30 pm; all pre-paint hours are dedicated to preparation, loading, cleaning, and shop support activities
- Load and offload the paint booth, ensuring components are properly staged, hung, and handled to prevent damage
- Conduct quality checks on painted components to ensure a consistent and acceptable finish
- Monitor paint and coating supply levels and report shortages to the Production Manager proactively
- Once all painting is completed and end-of-day responsibilities are fulfilled, the employee may leave the premises — the 8:00 pm time is a latest end time, not a mandatory departure time
Paint Booth Maintenance & Organization
- Maintain the paint booth and all surrounding areas in spotless condition at all times — this is a non-negotiable standard of the role
- Clean the paint booth before painting begins, during the pre-3:30 pm preparation window, to prevent dust contamination of fresh coatings — booth cleaning is not performed while paint is actively curing
- On non-painting days or when all paint is fully cured, perform thorough booth cleaning and maintenance as required
- Keep the paint book organized, current, and accurate — record coating types, batch numbers, application notes, and relevant job details for every job
- Ensure all paints, solvents, and coatings are properly labelled, stored, and disposed of in full compliance with WHMIS regulations
Production Shop Support — All Days
- Assist with general organization and cleaning of the production shop floor
- Operate overhead crane to move and position truck scale components — crane operation requires at least one other production team member present in the shop and actively assisting; crane may not be operated when working alone under any circumstances
- Operate forklift as required for material movement — forklift and all powered mobile equipment must be operated before 6:00 pm on painting days
- Support orderly staging of materials and finished goods
- Report any safety hazards, equipment issues, or maintenance needs to the Production Manager
Facility Responsibility — Evening Hours (Painting Days)
- From 6:00 pm onward, the employee is the sole person on the premises and is responsible for the security and safe operation of the facility
- Follow the Company's Working Alone procedure, including scheduled check-ins as established by the employer
- Crane, forklift, and all powered mobile equipment operation is strictly prohibited when working alone
- Before leaving, ensure all paint booth equipment is properly shut down, all doors and access points are secured, and the facility is properly locked
- Respond appropriately to any emergency situation and contact emergency services or management as required
- Report any incidents, near-misses, or security concerns to the Production Manager immediately
SCHEDULE & OPERATIONAL NOTES
This role operates on a flexible weekly schedule determined by production requirements. Two shift patterns apply:
Painting Days — 12:00 pm start, 8:30 pm latest end
- Scheduled on days when spray painting is required
- The employee is guaranteed 8 hours of paid time regardless of actual departure time
- 8:00 pm is the latest end time — the employee may leave earlier once all painting is completed, the booth is properly shut down, and the facility is secured
- 12:00 pm – 3:30 pm: Production team present in shop — crane-assisted material handling, booth loading, forklift operation, booth cleaning, and prep work
- 3:30 pm onwards: Employee works independently — spray painting operations begin
- 6:00 pm onwards: Employee is sole person on premises — facility responsibility in effect
- Includes a 30-minute unpaid meal break
Non-Painting Days — 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
- Scheduled on days when no spray painting is required, based on production planning
- Employee works alongside the production team during regular business hours
- Duties include booth cleaning and maintenance, shop organization, crane and forklift operation, staging, and general production support
- Employee is guaranteed 8 hours of paid time
- Includes a 30-minute unpaid meal break
The number of painting versus non-painting days in any given week is determined by the employer based on production requirements and is subject to change. The employee will be notified of their schedule with reasonable advance notice.
