Who we are
The BC Community Alliance (BCCA) is a local Black-led, community-based organization formed in 2019 and registered as a nonprofit in 2020. BCCA is dedicated to addressing structural inequities created by racism, especially anti-Black racism, and advancing equity, safety, wellbeing and economic mobility for Black, African and Caribbean communities in British Columbia.
The organization was born out of a crisis in our community following a racist bomb threat at Lord Byng Secondary School in Vancouver. Although this incident was foundational to BCCA’s formation, we are more accurately understood as a response to the racism and structural barriers experienced by Black and racialized communities.
Through Fraser Street Studios and the Community Venture Hub, BCCA creates spaces where youth and community members can develop skills, build businesses and access mentorship.
Who we’re looking for
BC Community Alliance is looking for an energetic, community-minded and versatile Community Kitchen Lead to join our team on a contract basis.
The successful individual will help manage the safe and effective use of the BCCA Community Kitchen while supporting culinary workshops, community programming and food-based entrepreneurship.
We are looking for someone who enjoys working with people, understands kitchen operations and is passionate about using food to support learning, culture, entrepreneurship and community connection.

What you’ll do
- Oversee the safe, clean and organized use of the community kitchen.
- Maintain kitchen procedures, cleaning schedules, inventory and equipment checklists.
- Ensure kitchen activities follow food-safety and sanitation requirements.
- Support cooking workshops, demonstrations, community meals, pop-ups and events.
- Coordinate guest chefs, mentors, facilitators and volunteers.
- Mentor youth and emerging food entrepreneurs developing food products or businesses.
- Support participants with recipe testing, food costing, portion control, packaging and inventory.
- Help participants prepare for markets, catering opportunities and product demonstrations.
- Coordinate kitchen schedules with Fraser Street Studios and BCCA programs.
- Build relationships with chefs, suppliers, food businesses and community organizations.
- Maintain records related to kitchen usage, supplies, attendance and incidents.
- Support Community Venture Hub showcases, markets and special events.
What you bring
- One to two years of experience in a commercial, community, educational or shared-kitchen environment.
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation and kitchen operations.
- Experience facilitating cooking activities, workshops or community programs.
- Experience mentoring youth, entrepreneurs or community members is preferred.
- FOODSAFE certification or an equivalent qualification is strongly preferred.
- Experience with food costing, inventory, menu planning or product testing is an asset.
- Strong people, communication and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent organization, attention to detail and reliability.
- A patient, supportive and culturally responsive approach.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Availability for some evening and weekend programming.
Formal chef credentials are welcome but are not required where the candidate has strong practical kitchen and community-programming experience.
