Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and reliable Crew Lead to join our team in Sudbury, Ontario.
This is a year-round, hands-on position with different responsibilities depending on the season.
During the summer, the Crew Lead works independently and is responsible for completing assigned landscaping and property maintenance work without direct supervision. This requires someone who is dependable, reliable, self-sufficient, organized, and able to take initiative. The Crew Lead is responsible for managing their assigned work, maintaining a high standard of quality, identifying property issues, completing required documentation and photos, and communicating effectively with supervisors and head office.
During the winter, the Crew Lead is responsible for a small crew completing snow and ice removal and winter property maintenance. The Crew Lead will communicate start times and expectations to crew members, coordinate and monitor the crew's work, ensure work is completed safely and to the required standard, and communicate crew, equipment, property, and site issues to the supervisor or head office.
This position requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, the ability to work independently, and the ability to take responsibility for a crew when required.
Work Schedule
- Regular workdays start at 6:00 a.m.
- Summer operations are scheduled 6 days per week.
- Schedules and hours may vary based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
- Winter snow removal operations are weather-dependent and require 24/7 on-call availability, including overnight, early morning, weekend, and holiday operations when required.
- Applicants must be comfortable with early morning starts and the demands of year-round outdoor work.
Summer Responsibilities – Independent Work
During the summer season, the Crew Lead will work independently and be responsible for:
- Completing assigned landscaping and property maintenance tasks without direct supervision.
- Performing softscape landscaping, including mowing, edging, pruning, trimming, mulching, planting, garden maintenance, and general landscape cleanup.
- Maintaining lawns, trees, shrubs, gardens, and flower beds to ensure properties are clean, healthy, and aesthetically maintained.
- Performing daily litter pickup.
- Completing general property maintenance, including debris removal, pressure washing, litter pickup, and general cleanup.
- Operating and safely maintaining landscaping equipment, including lawnmowers, trimmers, blowers, and other power equipment.
- Managing time effectively and prioritizing assigned work.
- Self-monitoring to ensure all work is completed efficiently, thoroughly, and to North Country standards.
- Taking initiative to address routine issues and communicating matters requiring additional attention.
- Identifying hazards and ensuring safe work practices and required PPE are followed.
- Inspecting properties and communicating general site issues to the appropriate supervisor or head office, including:
- Potholes
- Damaged or deteriorated curbs
- Broken or damaged signs
- Graffiti
- Property damage
- Safety hazards
- Other maintenance concerns
- Communicating job progress, site conditions, and customer or property concerns to supervisors or head office.
- Taking required photos of work completion and site conditions.
- Completing all required forms, site logs, and documentation using company apps and technology.
- Caring for company vehicles, equipment, and tools and reporting mechanical or maintenance concerns when identified.
- Maintaining a professional and positive attitude when interacting with customers, coworkers, and members of the public.

Winter Responsibilities – Crew Leadership
During the winter season, the Crew Lead will be responsible for coordinating and leading a small crew during snow removal and winter property maintenance operations.
Responsibilities include:
- Communicating required start times, reporting locations, and work expectations to crew members.
- Ensuring crew members are aware of their schedules and arrive prepared for the required work.
- Delegating tasks and coordinating crew activities throughout snow events.
- Operating snow removal equipment, including plow/salt trucks, loaders, sidewalk machines, tractors, and other winter equipment.
- Completing snow and ice removal, salting, daily litter pickup, debris removal, and general property maintenance as required.
- Monitoring the crew's work to ensure all assigned areas are serviced.
- Monitoring the quality and completion of work and ensuring no areas or tasks are missed.
- Ensuring work is completed safely and to North Country standards.
- Inspecting properties for hazards and identifying site concerns.
- Communicating crew issues, equipment issues, property issues, safety concerns, and other site issues to the supervisor or head office.
- Providing timely updates regarding job progress and completion.
- Ensuring crew members follow company safety procedures and use required PPE.
- Addressing routine issues within the crew and escalating matters to the supervisor when necessary.
- Monitoring changing weather and site conditions and communicating concerns as required.
- Taking required photos of work completion and site conditions.
- Completing all required forms, site logs, and documentation using company apps and technology.
- Assisting with responding to winter weather events and service requirements.
- Maintaining communication with supervisors throughout snow events.
- Being available for winter snow removal operations on a 24/7 on-call basis, including overnight, early morning, weekend, and holiday shifts when required.
Winter Leadership Expectations
The successful candidate must be able to:
- Clearly communicate start times and expectations to crew members.
- Keep the crew organized and productive.
- Monitor the quality and completion of work.
- Recognize when work has not been completed to the required standard and take appropriate action.
- Communicate problems promptly rather than allowing issues to go unreported.
- Maintain effective communication with the supervisor and head office.
- Take responsibility for ensuring the crew's assigned properties are properly serviced.
- Lead by example and ensure safe work practices are followed.
Required Experience
The following experience is mandatory:
- Previous professional experience in softscape landscaping and landscape maintenance.
- Previous experience operating snow removal equipment.
- Previous experience in property maintenance or a related field.
- Knowledge of the safe operation and proper use of landscaping and snow removal equipment.
The following qualifications and experience are considered assets:
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Hardscape experience, including patios, walkways, retaining walls, grading, concrete or mortar repair, cold patching potholes, or other landscape construction.
- Mechanical experience or experience performing basic equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Experience operating a variety of heavy equipment.
- Previous experience leading or supervising a crew.
- Additional equipment operator certifications or training.
Mandatory Qualifications
- Must live in Sudbury, Ontario or the immediate surrounding area.
- Valid G Class driver's licence.
- Satisfactory 3-year driver's abstract that meets company and insurance requirements.
- Reliable transportation to and from work.
- Professional softscape landscaping experience is mandatory.
- Snow removal equipment operator experience is mandatory.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and be self-sufficient.
- Ability to take initiative and manage assigned responsibilities without constant supervision.
- Ability to lead and direct a crew during winter operations.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to identify hazards, property concerns, and maintenance issues.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and lift and carry equipment and materials.
- Ability to consistently report for 6:00 a.m. starts, 6 days per week during regular operations.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
- Reliable attendance and availability during peak seasonal operations.
- Ability to follow company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
Additional Information
- This is a year-round position with seasonal landscaping, property maintenance, and snow removal responsibilities.
- The position is independent during the summer and crew-based during the winter.
- Daily litter pickup is a regular responsibility.
- Regular workdays begin at 6:00 a.m. and are scheduled 6 days per week.
- Employees must be prepared to work in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, rain, snow, and cold temperatures.
- Winter operations are weather-dependent and require 24/7 on-call availability, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
