The PEACE (Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling & Empowerment) Program provides support and counselling services for children and youth ages 2 to 18, who have experienced or witness violence or abuse. The PEACE Counsellor, will provide individual and group counselling, psycho-education, and other community based supports, aimed at breaking the cycle of violence, while helping participants to heal and build resilience. This position requires occasional travel to schools, community organizations, training, etc.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Interviews clients, prepares case histories and outlines services provided by the organization. Refers clients to more appropriate programs if needed.
- Assesses the impact of witnessing abuse on the child, the group readiness of the child and the support needs of the abused parent.
- Develops and conducts psycho-educational support groups for children.
- Conducts individual counselling sessions with the child and/or individual members of his/her family using techniques such as active listening, conflict resolution and psycho-education; provides emotional support.
- Provides emotional and parenting support and referral services for parents.
- Conducts post group interviews with children and/or their families. Recommends follow-up services where necessary and makes appropriate referrals.
- Maintains related records, statistics and prepares reports as required.
- Maintains current knowledge of issues and resources related to abuse and violence.
- Provides presentations and public awareness activities about services and issues.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Experience counselling children and youth
- Ability and willingness to be trained in current treatment best practises
- Experience with life skills/job skills programming an asset.
- Understanding of addiction, other related issues, and current treatment models preferred
- Solid understanding of human services ethics regarding confidentiality and appropriate boundaries.
- Ability to maintain a calm, professional approach in crisis situations.
- Demonstrated ability working constructively and cooperatively in a team setting.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge and experience with case recording practices
- Maintains ethical standards as laid out by governing body (RCC etc.), adherence to ADTS policies, especially strong professional boundaries
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Able to work with little supervision, while still contributing as a team member.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to utilize de-briefing opportunities and practise self-care
- Demonstrate a sensitivity and understanding of the client population’s socio-economic characteristics.
- Thorough knowledge of the impact of domestic violence and related issues, specifically in relation to children and youth an asset.
- Ensure that personal values and beliefs are not insinuated, promoted, or imposed on the clients.
- Knowledge of feminist theory and practice preferred
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft 365 programs
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related human / social service field.
- A minimum of two years’ previous work in a counselling/therapeutic field is required.
- Direct program delivery experience in the community social services sector with a demonstrated working knowledge of community-based programs and related provincial and community support systems is preferred.
- The worker must have a valid Class 5 driver's licence and access to safe, reliable transportation, and must obtain appropriate insurance as per Society policy.
- Must complete an acceptable Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check from the RCMP
- Experience working for a non-profit organization considered an asset
- Level 1 first aid with CPR
- Non-Violent crisis intervention training and/or mental health first aid training
- Food Safe training is an asset
