Job Overview
We are seeking a Production Technician – Material Handling & Surface Finishing to support our Metal fabrication operations in Langley, BC. In this role, you will organize and stage materials using fabrication drawings, safely move plates, beams, and components throughout the shop, and support both the Processing and Fabrication departments by ensuring the right materials are delivered on time and match all specifications and work orders.
A key focus of this position is delivering high-quality surface finishes on Metal products. You will prepare surfaces, apply industrial paints and coatings, and perform chemical passivation of stainless steel to meet customer and corrosion-resistance requirements, including mixing coatings, operating spray and finishing equipment, and inspecting finished work for quality and compliance. Working closely with supervisors, processors, welders, and fitters, you will help maintain a smooth, safe, and efficient flow of work from processing through fabrication and finishing, making this role ideal for someone who is comfortable reading drawings, highly detail-oriented, and committed to both shop-floor organization and top-quality finishes.
Responsibilities
Material Handling
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, BOMs, and cut lists to identify required materials, sizes, grades, and quantities.
- Organize and stage materials for jobs in both the Processing Department and Fabrication Department, ensuring the correct parts are at the right workstation at the right time.
- Verify that staged materials match drawing specifications and job requirements before releasing to production.
- Safely move plates, beams, and components between processing, fabrication, and finishing areas using forklifts, pallet jacks, and other handling equipment.
- Coordinate with processors, welders, fitters, and supervisors to prioritize staging based on the daily/weekly production schedule.
- Maintain clear, organized staging areas and update job status or material trackers as work moves through the shop.
Surface Finishing (Paint & Passivation)
- Prepare stainless steel and other components for finishing (cleaning, degreasing, masking, etc.)
- Apply paints, coatings, and passivation treatments according to standard operating procedures and customer specifications.
- Set up and operate finishing equipment (spray systems, passivation tanks, etc.) and perform routine adjustments and troubleshooting.
- Inspect finished products for quality, coverage, and compliance with specifications; document results as required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certificates in manufacturing, finishing, or a related field is an asset.
- 1–3 years of experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment, ideally with steel or metal products.
- Experience operating forklifts and other material handling equipment; forklift certification is an asset.
- Good mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work safely in a fast-paced shop environment and adapt to changing priorities
