Under limited supervision, the Recreation Therapist ensures that all therapeutic recreation interventions are evidence-based and meet standards of practice. This position involves a caseload of the Designated Supportive Living program as well as other residents on a referral basis; referrals can be made by other healthcare professionals, families, self-referral, or stakeholders. The Recreation Therapist will also be responsible for liaising with family members and participating in interdisciplinary meetings and conferences.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Responsible for the individual assessment of residents using a standardized Therapeutic Recreation tool.
2. To develop individualized intervention plans based on the assessment results and in collaboration with the residents, family and the interdisciplinary team.
3. Responsible for documenting assessments, intervention plans, outcomes, progress, attendance and evaluation on the resident’s chart.
4. Oversees that attendance records contain descriptive measures of resident’s participation.
5. Recreation Therapist will ensure that programming for individuals meets standards of practice and includes routines of daily living as well as specialized activities.
6. Able to provide a variety of goal-orientated programs on an individual, small and large group basis.
7. Responsible for evaluating program plans and resident goals/outcomes on a regular basis.
8. Reports resident progress in interdisciplinary meetings and family conferences
9. Commitment to research and professional development.
10. Supervises Life Enrichment Aides, volunteers and students.
11. Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would qualify. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
1. Professional membership in the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association.
2. Degree or diploma in Recreation Therapy, Recreation with a specialization in therapeutic recreation or Kinesiology.
3. Experience in a therapeutic recreation position working with older adults.
4. A valid operator's license with special classification 4 is required and must be maintained.
5. Physically fit and able to meet the demands of the position.
6. Valid First Aid and CPR that must be maintained.
7. Certification in Older Adult Fitness an asset.
