JOB SUMMARY:
This role supports the community by safely operating City transit vehicles while keeping routes on schedule and ensuring respectful conduct for the comfort of passengers and the public. The position is responsible for fare collection and verification, completing daily passenger counts, updating transit signage and maintaining a clean and welcoming bus interior and exterior. With care and dignity, the operator assists wheelchair users, seniors and passengers with physical challenges and ensures mobility aids are properly secured for safe travel. A strong commitment to safety is shown by operating transit vehicles on public roads in accordance with national and provincial driving regulations, following safe work procedures and promptly reporting hazards, injuries and near misses. Above all, the role balances professionalism, sound judgement and community connection while maintaining technical requirements and performing related duties that help keep local transit running smoothly.
As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to obtain and maintain clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
High School (Grade 12). Valid B.C. Class 2 Driver's License with Air Endorsement, with a driver’s abstract that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behaviour. WHMIS certificate.
Experience: Three (3) months of previous experience driving a Class II vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Willing and able to work shifts to meet service requirements and respond to operational needs. Serves as a visible representative of City Transit and provides courteous, inclusive assistance to community members to help ensure they reach their destinations safely and efficiently. Clearly demonstrated customer service skill set including conflict resolution, problem solving and sound decision-making to support safe, respectful interactions with the traveling public. Demonstrated aptitude and willingness to learn, including the ability to successfully complete training and qualify to operate all buses within the City’s transit fleet in accordance with established standards and procedures. Ability to understand, speak, read and write English to comprehend City policies, follow safety procedures and traffic signage, communicate directions and service information and complete accurate documentation and incident reports involving safety and or service. Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to WorkSafeBC requirements and applicable legislation, including the ability to recognize hazards, use required personal protective equipment, follow safe work procedures and promptly report hazards, injuries and near misses. Ability to remain calm and attentive under pressure, prioritize passenger and public safety and apply good judgement in emergencies, service disruptions and security concerns. Proven reliability, professionalism and integrity, including the ability to handle fares, maintain confidentiality when required and comply with City and departmental policies and standards. Ability to approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner. Demonstrated experience using computerized systems, administrative tools and office technology with the ability to adapt to the City’s systems as required.
PAY RATE:
This is a union position with the current pay rate of $35.65 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.
HOURS OF WORK:
8 hours per day, up to 40 hours per week. Varied schedule including daytime, evening, and weekend shifts.
Please note: This position is to provide extra capacity and to cover for absences such as sick and vacation relief. It requires availability for both short-notice and pre-scheduled work.
