For over 50 years, the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) has supported education and research on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Our mission is to inspire transformational relationships with the ocean through science. BMSC delivers immersive, hands-on learning experiences for students of all ages, supported by access to rich coastal ecosystems and strong partnerships with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations.
Position Overview
Providing leadership to education program coordinators, the Education Manager (EM) and their team bring to fruition BMSC’s vision to serve learners of all ages and diverse backgrounds who are interested in our oceans and coastal environments. The Education Manager oversees the coordination and delivery of BMSC’s University, Field Trip and Outreach Program. Reporting to the Head of Programs (or equivalent), the EM leads the development, coordination, and evaluation of teaching programs, supervision of staff, and assists in the strategic development of research-based content into our immersive, hands-on ocean research and education experiences. This position aligns with PMSA strategic goals and funding initiatives, supporting equity-focused engagement, and fostering respectful collaboration with Indigenous partners, including the Huu-ay-aht First Nations. The Education Manager also supports financial sustainability of education programs in partnership with the Head of Programs.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Program Delivery and Development:
- Administer BMSC Education programs and support ongoing development, sustainability and evolution of hands-on marine science programming aligned with funding and Strategic Planning.
University Programs:
- Oversee delivery of accredited University Courses in existing summer and fall programs
- In collaboration with key stakeholders and staff, advance PMSA’s strategic goal to jointly develop and deliver a renewed PMSA marine science curriculum.
Field Trip Program:
- Oversee the design and implementation of Field Trip Program curriculum of strategic programming (e.g. modules on ocean weather, coastal restoration and sustainable technologies, biodiversity conservation, and human-ocean interactions).
- Oversee the development and delivery of online programming for remote and underrepresented students.
- Oversee engaging, high-quality, hands-on science education in both classroom and outdoor settings.
- Identify and grow partnerships that support national and international mobility
Conferences, Workshops, and Outreach:
- Support the marketing and programming of scientific symposia, public events, and educator workshops.
- Ensure effective coordination of event logistics including venue setup, accommodation, and food service in collaboration with applicable colleagues across the organization.
- Oversee the development of tailored content for short courses and workshops
Educational Leadership and Coordination
- Ensure program quality and safety.
- Oversee permit compliance and logistics (e.g. vertebrate animal care protocols, Federal and First Nations collection and land permits, etc.).
- Integration of strategic research into academic programming.
- Contribute to building a meaningful and rewarding work environment and work to advance the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion in relation to staffing and program delivery.
- Assist with the preparation of funding applications.
Required Qualifications:
- MSc or PhD in Marine Science or a related discipline (equivalent experience may be considered).
- Proven leadership in team management and educational program delivery, preferably in the marine sciences (Minimum 3–5 years’ experience).
- Strong intercultural communication and relationship-building skills.
- Familiarity with EDIA principles and applying them in educational settings.
- Experience developing science curriculum and teaching or mentoring in field or classroom settings.
- Valid BC driver’s license.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records and Vulnerable Sector check.
- Flexibility to work evenings/weekends as required.
- Willingness to reside full-time in Bamfield, BC

Pay: $65,000.00-$74,000.00 per year
