Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Camp Counsellor to support children in a nurturing and safe environment. This role involves providing attentive care, assisting with daily activities, and fostering developmental growth. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children, particularly those with special needs or developmental disabilities, and possess a strong understanding of safety protocols and caregiving best practices. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families. Almost all of our clients have a diagnosis of Autism, most have a communication delay.
Responsibilities
Camp Counsellors work 1:1 or in small groups of clients providing child care to kids and teens with special needs
Camp Counsellors implement games, crafts, and activities with clients daily
Camp Counsellors may create and implement their own activities, or those which have been prepared ahead of time
Camp Counsellors ensure the safety of clients as their primary role, if clients are safe, then Camp Counsellors focus on the entertainment of the clients
Ensure clients are toileted, may include diaper changes, multiple times per day
Ensure clients are sent home with all of their items (clothing, crafts, bag, water bottles, etc.)
Ensure of the safety of clients on trips to other organizations/small outings
Complete Incident Reports and Cleaning Checklists daily
Cleaning and tidying such as vacuuming, mopping, cleaning toys, wiping down surfaces
Collaborate with the Camp Coordinator, Facility Assistant and Administrative Director for scheduling
Camp Counsellors use technology and digital skills, including opportunities to develop foundational artificial intelligence skills in the workplace
Camp Counsellors will use applications and websites such as Jane.app for scheduling and Canva to design materials which will be used by campers
For Camp Counsellors interested in building foundational skills in artificial intelligence, Chat GPT can be used to increase effective communication between team members and parents
This role is ideal for a youth seeking experience in the special needs field, or those pursuing education related to education/development
Qualifications
- Prior experience in home care, schools, or camp/daycare settings preferred
- Certifications such as CPR, First Aid, HIPAA compliance are highly desirable
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or autism is a plus
- Strong patience, observational skills, and the ability to work effectively with children who have complex needs
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with families and other caregivers
- Valid background check clearance required; must adhere to all safety protocols and confidentiality standards
This position works within Monday-Friday between the hours of 9am-5pm. Our camp runs from June 29-September 4th. One week off for staff vacation from Aug 3-7th 2026.
