About the Opportunity:
We are looking for an Occupational Therapist to join Therapy Services as part of the Provincial School Outreach Teams Program.
The Provincial School Outreach Program is hosted through the North Vancouver School District . It provides specialized in-person and virtual supports and services to school districts across British Columbia, especially those located in rural and remote regions of the province. The program’s team of outreach specialists travel on an ongoing basis to schools throughout BC and provide in person assessments, planning and support to students with disabilities and diverse abilities, while also designing virtual supports that school personnel can utilize subsequent to an in-person consultation with as school district.
Program specialists who hold full time position travel one week per month and provide virtual-educational support during non travel time. Because the program receives referrals on an ongoing basis the travel location for in-person support is not typically confirmed until three weeks prior to departure. Due to limited flight availability to rural and remote communities, outreach may occasionally involve travel on a weekend or holiday.
The program’s specialists place primary emphasis on serving the immediate needs of schools with priority given to providing direct and indirect service to students and families in whatever capacity is needed. Consultants use their specialization to provide support based on the unique context of every situation. In this regard, the position is quite different in nature from a conventional specialist assignment at a school. Flexibility and innovation are essential as consultants can expect circumstances at the school to change at the last minute due to any number of factors, including staff shortages. This will result in occasions when specialists need to adapt how they support students and the school during their visit. For instances in which a student is not attending school for whatever reason, PSO specialists discuss with families the possibility of visiting the home to provide support and/or carry out an assessment. The essential service that the program provides is making its support felt by a school community through building strong relationships with students, families, and staff during in-person visits. This position involves and requires collaborative innovation and learning, to build and maintain purposeful connections and relationships across British Columbia. The successful applicant understands the unique context of working in remote and rural regions of the province and meaningfully supporting students and families of Indigenous ancestry.
A Day in the Life of a BC CFA Provincial School Outreach Occupational Therapist:

Provide education and implement therapeutic programs using a coaching approach

Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to support children and families in their schools and communities

Travels to school districts throughout the province, frequency based on the needs of the client and school team

Use Evidence Based Practice and Family Centered Practice to guide clinical reasoning

Practices using a Trauma Informed approach

Assess motor abilities and how they impact movement, play and participation in a variety of environments
-
Prescribe and obtain equipment to optimize participation
-
Participate in staff meetings, case reviews, medical liaison meetings, and in-services.

Maintain up to date records that meet agency and regulatory body requirements

Collaborate with community partners

Undertake additional responsibilities as directed
The Qualifications and Skills You Bring:
Education, Training and Experience

Master's degree or equivalent in OT or Rehabilitation Medicine (OT)

Previous experience working in pediatrics is required

Practices in accordance with the International Classification of Function and F-words of childhood development with a commitment to inclusive practice and family centered care

Competency using a virtual platform, electronic client record system and word processing software

Must be registered with CHCPBC (includes Criminal Record Check)

Valid BC driver’s license with reliable use of a car for work with business insurance

Travel is required locally and within BC, frequency to be determined by the support needs of the caseload
