Hospice Muskoka is committed to providing palliative and end-of-life care to people and their loved ones throughout south and west Muskoka. Hospice Muskoka is a not-for-profit organization that delivers services through registered professional staff and dedicated volunteer supports. Hospice Muskoka operates Andy’s House, which provides end-of-life and respite beds for people with a palliative diagnosis. Hospice Muskoka is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and funded through a combination of funds from the Ministry of Health and donations from the public.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) provides compassionate, holistic, and resident-centered palliative care within a residential hospice setting. This role supports individuals and their families through the end-of-life journey, ensuring comfort, dignity, and quality of life. Nurses work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team to deliver care in alignment with Hospice Muskoka’s mission and philosophy.
Both RNs and RPNs work in the same capacity at Hospice Muskoka as defined by the College of Nurses Scope of Practice Guidelines.
This role works in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, such as with the Personal Support Workers (PSWs), Social Workers, NP/MD, Leadership Team, volunteers and other Community Partners.
This is a shift-based position, with 12-hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, as required. All duties are performed in accordance with Hospice Muskoka’s policies, procedures, and professional standards of practice, as set by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) and relevant legislation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver comprehensive nursing care to residents based on individual care plans, in collaboration with the Most Responsible Provider (MRP) – Nurse Practitioner/Medical Director (NP/MD) and interdisciplinary team members.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with Hospice Muskoka protocols and the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) standards.
- Monitor and assess physical, emotional, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of residents.
- Provide interventions, including pain and symptom management using a palliative approach.
- Support safe transfers, repositioning, and personal hygiene, respecting the resident's dignity and preferences.
- Document assessments, interventions, and outcomes clearly and accurately in resident health records.
- Assist in the routine environmental tasks such as cleaning, and disinfecting surfaces, rooms and floors.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with residents, families, and the interdisciplinary care team.
- Participate in supporting residents and families in person-centered decision making in regard to goals of care and treatment plan.
- Participate in staff and clinical team meetings, shift change reports, and family conferences as required.
- Serve as a resource and support for families and caregivers throughout the dying process and bereavement.
- Advocate for residents’ wishes, advance directives, and culturally appropriate care.
- Educate residents and families about disease progression, symptom management, and available supports.
- Contribute to staff mentoring, orientation, and ongoing education.
- Maintain active registration with the CNO and comply with its standards of practice and code of ethics.
- Engage in continuing education and reflective practice to enhance nursing competence.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
· RN / RPN current member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is required.
· Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE) or Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP) Certified is preferred or willingness to obtain as required for employment.
Experience
· Minimum of three (3) years’ nursing experience with individuals with a serious or life-threatening illness.
General:
1. A clear Criminal Records check with Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) is required.
2. Is fully vaccinated against/immune to Tuberculosis (two-step Tuberculin testing only), Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (whooping cough), Influenza, and COVID-19.
Pay: $33.06-$45.53 per hour
