The Opportunity
We are looking for someone with aptitude and the right attitude — not a finished résumé. If you have mechanical sense, a strong safety mindset, and a willingness to learn, we will train you into a fully qualified Water Operator.
You will learn the complete scope of the role: managing water delivery across a section of our canal and pipeline network, operating gates and control structures, running heavy equipment on off-season maintenance, and collecting water quality samples. You will start with support and progressively take on independent responsibility as you demonstrate each competency.
What You'll Learn to Do
- Manage daily water delivery and fulfill customer water orders across an assigned run.
- Operate manual and SCADA-controlled gates and structures.
- Inspect canals, pipelines, and structures; identify and resolve operational issues.
- Operate backhoe, loader, dozer, and excavator on off-season maintenance and rehabilitation.
- Collect water quality samples and field measurements.
- Complete daily logs, safety documentation, and hazard assessments.
- Respond to operational emergencies and after-hours calls as your competency grows.
What You Bring
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence, with willingness and eligibility to obtain a Class 3.
- Mechanical aptitude and a demonstrated willingness to learn.
- Strong safety mindset — asking questions and escalating beyond your competency is expected, not penalized.
- Basic computer skills for logging and reporting.
- Effective communication and customer-service skills.
- Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather.
- Willingness to work extended hours and take part in an on-call rotation in season as competency allows.
Assets
- Agricultural, irrigation, construction, or heavy equipment background.
- Class 3 licence already held.
- Farm or rural upbringing with practical equipment exposure.
