The Concurrent Disorders Counsellor is responsible for one to one counselling, assessment and referral for those with diagnosed co-occurring serious mental illness and substance use disorder.
KEY DUTIES - RESPONSIBILITIES
Ø To take a lead role in building the capacity of the mental health and addiction system to better serve people living with co-occurring substance use and mental health issues (concurrent disorders) in Grey and Bruce Counties
Ø Provide direct contact with a limited number of clients for assessment, treatment planning, and consultation with other service providers, community treatment and case management
Ø To provide education, and systems planning and evaluation
Ø To work closely with agencies and communities in developing a coordinated approach to deal with potential and existing addiction problems.
Ø Participate/contribute to development of forms to request and schedule consultations
Ø Provide consultation to individual staff about screening, assessment, treatment planning regarding individual clients experiencing concurrent disorder
Ø Provide case consultation in team settings regarding clients admitted to New Directions, CHOICES, Withdrawal Management Services, Addiction Day Treatment Program, G&B House, Court Support Services and the five Mental Health Teams in order to support accurate and complete assessments and treatment planning
Ø Participate in the development of a conceptual framework to guide concurrent disorders work and system integration.
Ø Identify/support new and existing services for client with concurrent disorders
Ø Assist in development of system-level protocols and procedures to support appropriate treatment plans
Ø Facilitate and support introduction of system-wide standardized screening
Ø Facilitate the development of comprehensive assessments
Ø Provide assessments, treatment and treatment planning to clients (best practice 10 to 15 clients)
Ø Provide clinical consultation to mental health and substance abuse programs to strengthen treatment plans and treatment of concurrent disorder clients
Ø Bridge consultation and indirect services offered by concurrent disorders unit in regional mental health care
Ø Become familiar with existing data for mental health and addiction system
Ø Develop tool to measure change in individual worker capacity and system capacity to serve concurrent disorder clients
Ø Monitor for opportunities to research/evaluate outcomes with concurrent disorder clients
Ø Develop, plan, implement, research, and initiate evaluation&/or research in collaboration with managers of the programs within the mental health and addiction programs
Hours of work are 37.50 per week. The normal workday is 8 hours, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Working in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Travel within Grey Bruce counties will be required

What you will bring
Ø Master’s degree in a social services or related field
Ø Current registration with one of the professional colleges listed (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Nurses of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, College of Psychologists of Ontario)
Ø Minimum 5 years recent and relevant clinical experience in mental health and addiction treatment
Ø Demonstrated clinical skills in working with clients with concurrent mental illness and substance abuse problems
Ø Preference will be given to candidates with training and experience specific to concurrent disorders
Ø Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, DSM IV and psychotropic medications
Ø Knowledge of best practice guidelines for concurrent disorders assessment and treatment
Ø Sound clinical judgment and strong assessment and treatment skills, including proficiency in motivational interviewing and CBT
Ø Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and relationship skills
Ø Leadership skills to participate in systems planning, capacity building and training
Ø Strong oral and written English language skills
Ø Strong public presentation skills
Ø Ability to work well with community and professional groups
Ø Ability to function well independently and as a team member
Ø A valid Canadian driver's license and the use of a reliable personal vehicle
Ø Minimum $2,000,000 third party liability vehicle insurance
Ø A satisfactory police record check including vulnerable sector screening
