SUMMER MAINTENANCE WORKER
CLASSIFICATION: Summer Maintenance Worker
RATE OF PAY: $20.00/ hour
HOURS OF WORK: 80 HOURS BI-WEEKLY – (40 hrs week) –8 Week Contract
RESPONSIBLE TO: Property Manager
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The primary purpose of this position is to maintain residential, administrative, and agency-owned properties by ensuring buildings, gardens, and outdoor spaces are clean, safe, well-maintained, and presentable. The position supports the ongoing upkeep of landscaping, gardens, and grounds to provide a welcoming and accessible environment for the people supported, staff, and visitors.

STATEMENT OF MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY:
· Perform ongoing routine maintenance in all agency-owned buildings.
· Perform groundskeeping duties at all agency-owned properties, including pruning trees and shrubs, gardening, painting, litter removal, and general property upkeep.
· Plant, water, weed, mulch, deadhead, and maintain flower beds, gardens, shrubs, and landscaped areas.
· Remove weeds and invasive plants while monitoring the health of gardens and landscaped areas.
· Assist with seasonal planting, garden bed preparation, and landscape improvements.
· Water gardens, trees, shrubs, and newly planted vegetation according to seasonal requirements.
· Report maintenance concerns, property hazards, irrigation issues, or damaged landscaping to the appropriate supervisor.
· Assist with outdoor cleanup projects, including debris removal, leaf collection, and storm cleanup as required.
· Ensure all outdoor areas are maintained in a safe, clean, and welcoming condition for people supported, staff, and visitors.
· Follow safe work practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and landscaping equipment.
· Be knowledgeable and aware of the agency's policy on Health and Safety, and practice and promote said policy at all times with both people supported and fellow employees.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in landscaping, gardening, groundskeeping, and general property maintenance is preferred.
- Minimum Grade 12 Secondary School education.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic gardening and landscaping practices, including planting, weeding, pruning, watering, and maintaining flower beds and green spaces.
- Experience operating and maintaining landscaping equipment and hand tools safely.
- Basic knowledge of building maintenance and minor repairs is considered an asset.
- Preference will be given to post-secondary students enrolled in Horticulture, Landscape Technician, Landscape Management, Environmental Studies, or other related programs.
- Ability to work independently and outdoors in varying weather conditions while maintaining a high standard of property appearance.
WORKING CONDITIONS/EFFORTS:
· Lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.
· Moving furniture
· Digging
· Overhead work
· Regular use of ladder
· Able to perform emergency first aid up to and including CPR
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
· NRP Police Clearance certificate – Including vulnerable sector clearance
· One-million-dollar liability insurance on your automobile insurance policy.
· Valid Ontario driver’s license.
· Valid First Aid Certificate.
· Preference will be given to persons with own vehicle for daily use.
HEALTH & SAFETY:
-Works in the manner and with the protective devices, measures and procedures required by OHS Act and regulations
-Uses or wears the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the worker’s employer requires to be used or worn
- Advise workers of the existence of any potential or actual danger.
- Where so prescribed, provide a worker with written instructions as to the measures and procedures to be taken for protection of the worker
-Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of a coworker
Pay: $20.00 per hour
Work Location: In person
