Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Seniors and Assisted Living (or designate), the PSW/Home Help Worker is responsible for providing personal support and/or home help services to seniors living in the Assisted Living program or independently in the community. This role helps seniors and individuals with disabilities with personal care, household tasks, light meal preparation, errands, companionship, and monitoring overall well-being to maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide personal care assistance and support with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, continence care, and safe transfers, based on the resident’s individualized care plan.
- Assist residents with medication reminders and medication-related routines in accordance with organizational policies and resident care plans.
- Provide light housekeeping services such as cleaning, laundry, dusting, vacuuming, and organizing living environment.
- Assist with light meal preparation, grocery shopping, and ensuring safe food storage.
- Provide companionship and social support to reduce isolation and promote overall well-being.
- Monitor resident’s home environment to mitigate the risk of accidents and potential hazards.
- Observe and report changes in residents’ physical, mental, or emotional condition and communicate concerns promptly to the supervisor.
- Maintain accurate documentation including service logs, resident records, progress notes, incident reports, and required program documentation.
- Follow organizational policies and health and safety procedures to ensure safe service delivery.
- Commitment to participate in staff training, meetings, and community events as required.
- Support cross-departmental collaboration, contribute with enthusiasm to WWCC initiatives, and embody the values of Warden Woods as part of our unique communities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate from a recognized institution or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Minimum one year of experience working directly with seniors and/or individuals with disabilities in a community, home care, or long-term care setting.
- Experience supporting older adults living with dementia, cognitive impairment, or complex care needs is an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of personal care techniques, infection prevention and control practices, and safe lifting and transfer procedures.
- Ability to perform physical duties including standing, walking, bending, reaching, and assisting resident mobility using proper body mechanics and transfer techniques, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
- Strong knowledge of safe housekeeping practices and basic meal preparation.
- Strong understanding of assisted living standards, health & safety regulations, and emergency response procedures.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, respect resident dignity and demonstrate empathy and patience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to build trust and positive relationships.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and adapt to different home environments.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts.
- Standard First Aid & CPR certification is required (or can be obtained at the start of employment).
- Successful completion of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check prior to start.
- Knowledge of community life in Southwest Scarborough is an asset
- Understanding of equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive practices.
- A clear Criminal Reference Check is a condition of employment.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Compensation and Hours of Work:
Employment Type: Casual
Hours: Up to 30 hours per week. The PSW role requires availability for overnight shifts (11 PM – 7 AM on weekdays and 7 PM – 7 AM on weekends). The Home Help Worker role requires availability to work a variety of shifts between 9 AM and 5 PM, Nonday through Friday.
Hourly Rate:
- PSW: $24.33 per hour (plus the applicable PWE of $3/hr)
- Home Help Worker: $23.15 per hour
