What is the job?
The Star Worker works alongside a team member from the Superior North EMS Paramedics respond to individuals in a mental health/addiction crisis and will be situated at the local Superior North EMS station when so scheduled. The STAR Worker completes a comprehensive mental health assessment and connects individuals to the appropriate mental health/addiction’s services and provides follow-up to individuals. The work of the STAR Worker is guided in practice to apply the principles of Recovery.
What will you do day to day?
- Provide crisis intervention, support services and safety planning to individuals experiencing a mental health and/or addiction crisis.
- Work in collaboration with Superior North EMS Paramedics by providing guidance and expertise in mental health and addiction intervention crisis and or resolution strategies through de-escalation techniques.
- Provide service information and assist in appropriate referrals to mental health and addiction services, community-based programs, and other relevant support options including primary care, ensuring a comprehensive approach to care.
- Determine need for admission to a treatment facility, including safe sobering sites, addiction beds or Safe Bed if available.
- Maintain up-to-date client information and records in agency client records systems.
- Ensure all required documentation is completed in a timely fashion
- Communicate service and client information in accordance with established procedures.
- Maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, clients, family members, and other mental health/addictions specialists as appropriate.
- Attend and contribute to Crisis Response Service team meetings and other client-related meetings as required.
- Ensure safe work methods and practices at all times.
- Represents the Canadian Mental Health Association, Thunder Bay Branch, in a professional manner and adheres to standards consistent with the values and philosophy of the Association.
- Adhering to and promoting CMHA’s Code of Ethics Policy
- Complying with CMHA’s Health and Safety Policies
- Complying with Superior North EMS applicable policies, procedures and protocols.
- Performs any other tasks related to the position as required.
What do you bring to the job?
- Diploma or Degree in the Health and Human Services
- Strong background working with individuals with mental illness & addictions
- Good knowledge of community health and other health related social service resources
- Must possess advanced skills in crisis assessments, documentation and intervention strategies and/or possess ASIST
- Experience and knowledge of the criminal justice system is an asset
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Good problem solving, teamwork and counseling skills
- Computer and data entry skills (EMHware)
- Physically capable to perform job requirements
- Ability to speak French considered an asset
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
- Valid Class “G” Driver’s License
- Current Police Vulnerable Sector Check
