Located approximately 155 kilometres northwest of Prince George in central BC, the Mount Milligan Mine is a conventional truck-shovel open-pit copper and gold mine and concentrator with a 60,000 tpd capacity copper flotation processing plant.
Mount Milligan operates with comfortable camp accommodations equipped with private washrooms, TV, Wi-Fi, an onsite gym, and other recreational activities. Bus transportation to and from site is provided free of charge from several locations within the region.
Mount Milligan promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Mine Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mount Milligan Mine (MTM) operations site.
This role operates on a rotation of 14 days on / 14 days off at a 12-hour daily schedule with camp accommodations provided.
Reporting to the Mine Technical Services Superintendent, the Mine Geotechnical Engineer will work within the Mine Technical Services team to provide engineering support focused on open pit slope monitoring and mine waste and stockpile management; and other project work as required to support the open pit mine.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor pit wall performance using ground-based radar, piezometers, and visual inspections to identify and manage geotechnical risks.
- Analyze geotechnical monitoring data and slope movement trends to assess pit stability and provide timely recommendations to operations.
- Conduct routine geotechnical inspections of pit slopes, catch benches, haul roads, stockpiles and other mine infrastructure.
- Develop, implement, and maintain ground control management plan (GCMP), Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), and ground control procedures.
- Provide geotechnical support to mine operations, ensuring safe mining practices and compliance with geotechnical design criteria.
- Coordinate and manage pit wall depressurization and dewatering programs, including horizontal drilling and performance monitoring.
- Coordinate and manage geotechnical investigations.
- Support short-term and long-term mine planning by providing geotechnical design parameters, slope recommendations, and risk assessments.
- Prepare technical reports, analyses, presentations, and regulatory documentation related to slope stability, geotechnical incidents, and monitoring programs.
- Collaborate with mine engineering, geology, operations personnel, Corporate Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Engineer of Record and external consultants to evaluate and mitigate geotechnical hazards.
- Promote a strong safety culture by participating in risk assessments, incident investigations, and ensuring compliance with applicable mining regulations and company standards.
- Bachelor of Applied Science in Geological or Geotechnical Engineering
- 4+ years of experience with rock mechanics in the mining industry preferred
- Mine design & Geotechnical software experience (preferably Hexagon MinePlan, Deswik, Rocscience Suite)
- Familiarity with geotechnical field investigations, slope design and analysis and surveillance of geotechnical structures such as Open Pit and Stockpiles.
- Sound knowledge and experience in hard rock mechanics
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills with all levels of the operations
- Strong computer skills
- Exposure to project coordination and ability to make sound project decisions
- Registered, or eligible to register, with EGBC
- Possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.
- Good work ethic and a strong attitude towards safety are essential requirements
- Work involves a camp-based role at the Mount Milligan Mine site with a set work schedule on a 14x14, 12 hours per day
- Candidates must be able to maintain high levels of performance for extended shifts, up to 12 hours in duration
- Occasional exposure to hazardous environments with the requirement of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Mount Milligan is a safety-sensitive environment and promotes a drug & alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a ZERO – TOLERANCE policy, with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs/paraphernalia on site
