SUMMARY
Piikani Child and Family Services (PCFS) is looking to hire a Blackfoot Connections (BC) Cultural Coordinator. The purpose of this role is to ensure that all children and families in Piikani gain a sense of belonging, found in family, community, language, culture, traditions, and Piikani Poomahksin (Transferred Rights). The BC Cultural Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to connect children and families to their Piikani way of life in Piikani Nation. Working collaboratively with PCFSD Programs and other community resources, the BC Cultural Coordinator plans, facilitates, and promotes a range of events to support cultural learning working closely with our Outreach Team and Community Elders. The BC Cultural Coordinator works closely with and reports directly to our Prevention Manager.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a full-time, one-year contract position with the possibility of an extension based on performance evaluation and funding availability. Hours of work will be 8:00am-4:00 pm Monday through Friday. Some evenings and weekends may be required. Travel may be required. The annual salary range for this position will be $50,000- $62,000, based on experience and education level. After successful probation period an extended health and pension plan is available. This position is 80% in the field with some hours in the office during the week. Consistent involvement in Piikani way of life (Piikanissini) and attendance in ceremonies and other cultural events is required.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, organize and coordinate PCFS land-based, cultural workshops, programming/activities, teachings, ceremonies, and healing practices for children, families and agency staff.
- Consult with the PCFS Program Managers and Elders for cultural support and direction.
- Liaison with PCFS Employees: provide information, resources and referrals for a family’s cultural and traditional needs.
- Ensure children and families have the opportunity to learn the Blackfoot language.
- Engage and communicate with both internal and external community resources to deliver services on the job
- Assist other staff in developing a child and family's cultural plan and connection.
- Provide the PCFS Employees with information regarding appropriate ceremonial, cultural, values, and traditions best suited for families and children’s Piikani way of life development.
- Take initiative to ask questions and suggest ways to engage with the community to deliver cultural knowledge.
- Be a resource for cultural knowledge, connections and practices for the agency staff and the families we serve.
- Be knowledgeable about working protocols/agreements between CFS’s, DFNA’s and within PCFS Programs.
- Ensure the cultural support services are delivered with excellence and conform to PCFS policy and procedures, as well as to provincial and/or federal regulations and standards.
- Focus on creating a safe space in a gentle and respectful manner when delivering knowledge and teachings to the community.
- Prepare statistical reports for the Management Team that outline current plans and future opportunities.
- Provide monthly reports on work schedule and Cultural workshops and events with children and families.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree or Diploma in Indigenous / Native Studies, or a comparable field.
- Experience working with Piikani families and children or with other First Nation children and families.
- Experience working in a Human Services setting.
- Travel with Alberta is required in the position from time to time for cultural events.
- Working knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFEA).
- Working knowledge of community resources and ability to facilitate professional relationships with external agencies.
- Familiarity with Blackfoot language and Piikani culture, values, traditions and Poomahsin (Transferred Rights).
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work in a flexible manner.
- Basic computer skills.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Current clean Criminal Record Check.
- Current clean Child Intervention Check.
