The Packaging Line Lead is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the packaging line to ensure cosmetic products are packaged safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and company quality standards. The Packaging Line Lead provides direct supervision and support to Packaging Line Associates while coordinating production activities, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring production schedules are met with minimal downtime.
This position serves as the primary point of contact on the packaging line, working closely with Production, Quality Assurance, Warehouse, Maintenance, and Planning teams to ensure efficient operations and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Production Leadership
- Lead and actively participate in daily packaging operations while working alongside Packaging Line Associates.
- Assign work responsibilities and monitor team performance to ensure production targets, quality standards, and safety requirements are achieved.
- Coordinate line startup, changeovers, shutdowns, and line clearance activities.
- Monitor production flow and proactively address bottlenecks to maximize line efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Ensure adequate staffing and balanced workloads throughout the shift.
- Escalate equipment, quality, material, or staffing issues promptly to Production Management.
- Train, mentor, and provide day-to-day guidance to Packaging Line Associates.
- Promote a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
- Ensure new employees receive appropriate onboarding and job-specific training.
- Monitor employee adherence to GMP, safety requirements, attendance expectations, and standard work practices.
- Provide performance feedback and communicate concerns to the Production Supervisor or Manager.
Quality & GMP Compliance
- Ensure all packaging activities comply with GMP, SOPs, work instructions, and company policies.
- Lead completion and review of batch records, packaging documentation, line clearance forms, reconciliation records, and other controlled documentation.
- Verify product identity, packaging components, labels, lot numbers, expiration dates, and coding accuracy before and during production.
- Perform and document in-process quality checks and ensure deviations are reported and documented appropriately.
- Coordinate with Quality Assurance regarding inspections, product holds, investigations, and corrective actions.
- Ensure all documentation is completed accurately, legibly, in accordance with data integrity requirements, and in a timely manner.
- Ensuring compliance with GMP, health and safety regulations, SOPs, and company policies.
- Supporting internal, customer, and regulatory audits.
- Ensuring packaging line readiness, documentation accuracy, and product traceability.
- Promoting a culture of quality, safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Immediately reporting quality concerns, deviations, equipment failures, and safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.
ERP & Inventory Responsibilities
- Perform production transactions within the company's ERP system, including production reporting, material consumption, finished goods reporting, inventory movements, and work order completion.
- Verify inventory accuracy and reconcile packaging materials and finished goods.
- Coordinate with Warehouse personnel to ensure timely availability of packaging components and materials.
- Report material shortages and support inventory accuracy initiatives.
- Maintain accurate electronic and paper production records.
Equipment & Process Management
- Verify packaging equipment is properly set up, calibrated (where applicable), and ready for production.
- Assist with troubleshooting packaging equipment and coordinate with Maintenance when repairs are required.
- Ensure preventive maintenance schedules and equipment cleaning requirements are followed.
- Monitor overall equipment effectiveness and identify opportunities to improve productivity and reduce waste.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, efficiency, and productivity.
- Assist in developing and updating SOPs, work instructions, and training materials as required.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Post-secondary education in Manufacturing, Operations, Business, or a related field is considered an asset.
Experience
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in a manufacturing or packaging environment.
- Previous experience leading or supervising production employees preferred.
- Experience in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, food, or other GMP-regulated manufacturing environments strongly preferred.
- Experience using ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Sage, Oracle, or similar) is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and quality systems.
- Working knowledge of production documentation and batch record requirements.
- Experience using ERP systems for production reporting and inventory transactions.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot basic packaging equipment issues.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Ability to interpret production schedules, work orders, and technical documentation.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 lbs (11 kg); occasionally up to 50 lbs (23 kg) with assistance.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks and manual handling of packaging materials.
- Ability to bend, twist, reach, climb stairs, and work around manufacturing equipment.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate equipment, complete documentation, and use computer systems.
Working Conditions
- Manufacturing environment with exposure to packaging machinery and moderate noise levels.
- Required use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hairnets, beard covers (where applicable), gloves, safety glasses, and protective footwear.
- May require overtime, weekend work, or shift work to meet production demands.
