Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial Trucking Fleet Director of Operations to lead and grow our transportation business. This individual will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of fleet operations, including dispatch, driver management, customer development, fleet utilization, safety, maintenance, and profitability.
The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes ownership of building efficient systems, developing customer relationships, securing freight opportunities, and maximizing the performance of our fleet. Key Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day operations of the trucking fleet to ensure safe, efficient, and profitable operations.
- Manage dispatch, route planning, scheduling, and equipment utilization to maximize fleet productivity.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and retain professional drivers while fostering a culture of accountability and safety.
- Develop and maintain relationships with customers, brokers, and shippers to secure consistent freight opportunities and grow the customer base.
- Negotiate freight rates, transportation contracts, and carrier agreements to maximize revenue and profitability.
- Monitor key performance indicators including fleet utilization, fuel consumption, driver productivity, on-time delivery, and operating costs.
- Oversee preventative maintenance programs and coordinate repairs to minimize equipment downtime.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable transportation regulations, safety standards, Hours of Service requirements, and company policies.
- Implement and improve standard operating procedures, technology, and reporting systems to enhance operational efficiency.
- Work closely with warehouse and logistics teams to ensure seamless shipping, receiving, and customer service.
- Develop operating budgets, monitor expenses, and identify opportunities to improve margins.
- Investigate customer concerns, resolve operational issues, and maintain strong client relationships.
- Collaborate with ownership to develop strategic growth initiatives, expand operations, and identify acquisition and partnership opportunities.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in trucking, transportation, logistics, or fleet operations.
- Proven experience managing dispatch, drivers, fleet operations, and customer relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to secure freight, negotiate rates, and build long-term relationships with brokers and shippers.
- Strong understanding of transportation regulations, fleet compliance, safety programs, and maintenance planning.
- Experience using Transportation Management Systems (TMS), GPS tracking, fleet management software, and Microsoft Office.
- Financial acumen with experience managing operating budgets, analyzing KPIs, and improving profitability.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of leading multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Existing relationships with freight brokers, shippers, or transportation customers.
- Experience scaling transportation operations or building a fleet.
- Knowledge of warehouse operations, inventory management, and supply chain logistics.
- Experience implementing operational systems and process improvements.
