About the Role
The Building Automation Installation Technician / Electrician plays a pivotal role in delivering high-performance building automation systems across commercial new construction and retrofit projects. Drawing on your experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS), you will lead installations, as well as carry out service, troubleshooting, and diagnostics to ensure systems are installed safely, accurately, and fully prepared for successful commissioning.
You are confident working independently in active construction environments, interpreting drawings and specifications, and taking ownership of installation work from start to finish. You will collaborate closely with project managers, commissioning teams, and other trades to solve complex technical challenges, deliver high-quality workmanship, and contribute to reliable, high-performing building systems that consistently meet and exceed customer expectations. While you may assist with troubleshooting and commissioning activities, your primary focus will be project-based installations rather than ongoing service, maintenance, or emergency response work.
In this role you will
Building Automation Installation
- Install building automation systems, DDC controllers, control panels, sensors, actuators, relays, transformers, communication wiring, conduit, and related electrical/control components.
- Complete control wiring and terminations in accordance with project drawings, wiring diagrams, specifications, electrical code requirements, and company standards.
- Install and label field devices, panels, cabling, and equipment in a neat, organized, and serviceable manner.
- Support installation of BAS systems for HVAC equipment, mechanical rooms, air handling units, VAV boxes, boilers, heat pumps, pumps, fans, and other building systems.
- Identify installation issues, drawing discrepancies, missing information, or site conflicts and escalate them to the appropriate project lead.
- Assist with point-to-point checks, functional testing, deficiency correction, and commissioning support.
- Complete work efficiently while maintaining a high standard of quality and workmanship.
Project and Site Coordination
- Work closely with project managers, lead technicians, electricians, mechanical contractors, general contractors, and other trades.
- Follow project schedules and communicate progress, constraints, and material needs in a timely manner.
- Coordinate installation work with other trades to avoid conflicts and support project milestones.
- Review drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, and installation details relevant to assigned work.
- Assist with layout, material planning, and staging of tools and equipment for assigned project tasks.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work, deficiencies, redlines, site conditions, and material usage as required.
- Support project closeout by helping resolve deficiencies and providing information needed for as-built drawings and documentation.
Quality, Safety, and Compliance
- Perform all work in accordance with company safety policies, WorkSafeBC requirements, electrical code requirements, and site-specific safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Use tools, ladders, lifts, testing equipment, and company vehicles safely and responsibly.
- Ensure installations are neat, labelled, accessible, and consistent with company quality standards.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, installation risks, or site concerns promptly.
- Maintain company tools, vehicles, equipment, and materials in good condition.
Communication and Professionalism
- Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, project teams, clients, consultants, contractors, and other trades.
- Represent the company positively on construction sites and in client facilities.
- Ask questions when drawings, scope, or site conditions are unclear.
- Take ownership of assigned work and follow through on tasks to completion.
- Support a team-oriented work environment and contribute to continuous improvement in installation practices.
To Succeed in this Role
Must Have Skills
- Red Seal Journeyperson Electrician; Level 3 or 4 Electrical Apprentice may be considered with relevant experience.
- Experience installing building automation systems/DDC controls, in commercial environments.
- Strong ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, control schematics, mechanical drawings, specifications, and installation details.
- Proven installation experience on commercial construction, retrofit, institutional, municipal, or light industrial projects.
- Strong hands-on skills in wiring, conduit installation, termination, and troubleshooting.
- Valid driver’s licence with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Ability to meet physical requirements of the role, including lifting up to 50 lbs and working in active construction environments (ladders, lifts, mechanical rooms, rooftops, ceilings, etc.).
- Ability to pass required security clearances where applicable.
- Willingness to travel locally to project sites as required.
- Basic computer and mobile application skills for documentation, reporting, timesheets, and communication.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with BAS components, HVAC equipment, and mechanical systems.
- Experience working in highly technical environments such as institutional, municipal, or mission-critical facilities.
- Exposure to multiple trades and construction site coordination workflows.

Work Environment
- Home base - The Kerr Controls Vancouver office, your hub for collaboration and connection.
- Typical hours: Monday–Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm, keep your evenings free.
- Hit the Road - Occasional travel within the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, and Vancouver Island as required, see the sights while you work!
