Position Summary
As a lead role to the Member Accounting service team, the Assistant Manager will work in collaboration with the other Assistant Managers to assist the Department Manager/Director in providing leadership and expertise in the development and execution of the financial management and reporting strategies needed to support the business needs and goals. The Assistant Manager will assist with the preparation and analysis of financial statements.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate day-to-day activities of the Member Accounting department leading to the production of monthly and year-end financial statements of the Co-operatives in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Prepare, analyze and review financial statements and working papers.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to the Member Accounting service team.
- Assist in mapping out the skills matrix for the development of the Member Accounting service team and take a lead role in training and mentorship of the team.
- Assist with the development and implementation of file standards and procedures that lead to efficiency in the workflow.
- Provide back-up support for the Member Accounting team.
- Recommend and develop internal control procedures.
- Provide assistance and support for the following areas:
o Preparation of monthly and year-end financial statements with supporting working papers and back-ups ready for audit or review by the external accountants;
o Assist outside Accountants during the audits/reviews;
o Provide accounting support to Co-operative staff including Quasar support;
o Training and orientation of Co-op managers and staff;
o Cross-training and back-up of staff;
o Attend to queries from government agencies as to GST, Corporate taxes and Statistics Canada;
o Monitor and follow-up on inventory count schedules and cut-off;
o Financial reporting to the Board of Arctic Co-operatives Limited;
o Design, develop and implement required financial reporting formats;
o Manage the master chart of accounts;
o Monitor and maximize the cash efficiencies of the Co-operatives;
o Maximize the use of technology in financial reporting;
o Assist in the development of management reports.
- Assist the District Support Advisors with financial reporting and control issues.
- Prepare and submit reports required by the department.
- Provide calculation of patronage dividends and payouts schedule to the Co-operatives.
- Travel to the Co-operatives, as required.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- Professional accounting designation
- Minimum of 5 years experience in accounting and financial analysis
- Proficient in preparing year-end financial statements and working papers
- Experience with accounting and financial analysis within a computerized environment
- Advanced knowledge in using spreadsheet programs, i.e. Excel
- Proficiency in using accounting software programs, i.e. ACCPAC, MS Office Suite and some POS system
- Proficient in developing and analyzing financial data
- Leadership and supervisory skills
- Experience with mentoring and training of staff would be an asset
- Strong organizational and administrative skills
- Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team
- Strong time management and ability to multitask
- Strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
