Summer ROCKS - Youth
An eight-week, no-cost, in-person, drop-in program offered to Youth (ages 13–18):
Activities ranging in academic, recreational, and social activities in a safe, supportive space. It includes mentorship, post-secondary exploration, job readiness (resumes, interviews), and financial literacy workshops. Activities will also include gardening, nature exploration, and intercultural and intergenerational experiences.
Role Description
Under the supervision and guidance of the Youth Development Lead, the Youth Development Assistant will take a role in developing and co-leading an 8-week no-cost summer program for children aged 13 to 18 years old. Responsibilities and tasks will include:
- Execute a diverse range of educational and recreational activities tailored to culturally diverse youth aged 13 to 18.
- Assist in planning, executing and reporting on activities: sports, educational, environmental, recreational, visual, and performing arts (e.g. Free Play for Kids, Terwillegar Rec Centre, Edmonton Public Library).
- Assist in organizing events and connecting youth with relevant organizations to ease transitions to post-secondary education (e.g., Norquest, Metro Education, University of Alberta tours).
- Mentor youth on employment prospects, community involvement, volunteering, and addressing family and social challenges.
- Support newcomers, marginalized, and vulnerable youth in navigating the Canadian education system, focusing on transitional points (e.g., moving from junior high to high school).
- Foster self-confidence, community belonging, and resilience by addressing expressed challenges and incorporating them into program activities.
- Leverage community resources and learning opportunities.
- Engage and coordinate with partners and community stakeholders to facilitate access to diverse resources, role models, and support networks for the Riverbend ROCKS youth.
- Establish daily and weekly goals and implement activities that meet program objectives.
- Supervise youth during the daily activities and monitor attendance.
