Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site leadership position responsible for overseeing the design studio and leading the development of high-quality architectural projects from concept through permit approval. The Project Designer Lead will manage the day-to-day operations of the design studio, directly supervising a team of Junior Designers and coordinating the work of Architectural Technologists. This role is responsible for ensuring all design deliverables meet MEM Engineering's standards for quality, accuracy, code compliance, and permit readiness. Key responsibilities include leading design development, preparing and reviewing architectural and construction drawings, coordinating project documentation, overseeing space planning and design solutions, and ensuring that design intent is accurately reflected throughout all project phases. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Project Managers, Engineers, Consultants, and Clients to coordinate technical requirements, resolve design challenges, and maintain project schedules. In addition to project leadership, the Project Designer Lead will mentor and develop junior team members, establish and maintain drafting and design standards, perform quality control reviews, and foster a collaborative, high-performing studio environment. The ideal candidate is a strong leader with exceptional architectural design, technical coordination, and project management skills, capable of managing multiple projects while delivering accurate, code-compliant, and permit-ready drawing packages in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a design team of Junior Designers, and coordinate work with Technologists
- Oversee daily studio operations, workflow, and project scheduling to keep deliverables on track
- Review and quality-check architectural, structural, and MEP drawings for residential, commercial, and industrial projects
- Coordinate between design staff and technologists to ensure technical accuracy and code/permit compliance
- Act as the primary point of contact between the studio, clients, project managers, and municipal authorities
- Allocate resources and manage workload distribution across concurrent projects
- Provide hands-on training, feedback, and professional development for junior team members
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and performance management within the studio
- Uphold and reinforce MEM Engineering's standards of professionalism, quality, and client service
Qualifications
- Minimum 3-4 years of experience in a design, drafting, or studio coordination role within engineering, architecture, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or supervising a design team
- Proficiency with AutoCAD/BIM tools and standard design software
- Working knowledge of Ontario building codes and municipal permit/approval processes is an asset
- Strong leadership, organizational, and time-management skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with confidence liaising with clients and authorities
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and shifting priorities in a fast-paced studio environment
- Diploma or degree in Architectural Technology, Engineering Design, or a related discipline
