Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Department Head Production Manager, while demonstrating a commitment to quality, efficiency and accuracy, the Welder sets up, adjusts and operates a variety of gas tungsten arc (GTAW) welding equipment to weld ferrous and non-ferrous metals in order to produce parts and products according to specification; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Receives and reviews shop orders, drawings, prints, materials lists and welding process specifications
· Identifies material requirements
· Determines sequence of operations and set-up required
· Identifies and selects dies and fixtures
· Selects and inspects raw materials, necessary to complete job requirements
· Performs necessary set-up of tooling and equipment
· Verifies that equipment is serviceable and no safety problems exist prior to operation
· Tacks and welds first article
· Checks and inspects first piece
· Verifies that first article conforms to product specifications
· Identifies and investigates discrepancies
· Determines and takes necessary action to remedy problem
· Submits first articles for QC inspection as required
· Produces required quantity of parts according to shop order and product specifications
· Monitors production cycle
· Identifies and acts on any malfunctions or problems
· Operates manual or semi-automatic flame cutting equipment, brazing and soldering equipment, and other shop equipment necessary to accomplish essential results
· Uses, cleans and safeguards monitoring and measurement equipment (IMTE) necessary to accomplish essential results
· Identifies and reports deficiencies
· Submits IMTE for inspection, calibration and maintenance according to established procedures and schedules, and as required, ensuring continued accuracy
· Identifies and requisitions required parts, gases, consumables, and other materials to sustain machine operation and assure on-going production
· Scans products as they are received, completed and sent to the next operation as per shop procedure Completes employee time log tag
· Acquires and maintains CWB certifications
· Is familiar with the responsibilities of employees according to Workplace Health and Safety Legislation
· Maintains a safe work environment and complies with safe work procedures
· Reports any unsafe working conditions. Familiar with the Fire Plan
· Performs other related functions as directed
Working Relationships
· Cooperates with and coordinates work activities with fellow employees
· Identifies and reports defects and non-conformance to Welding Supervisor/Production Manager
· Discusses productivity and quality issues with Welding Supervisor/Production Manager
Environmental Conditions
· A formal workweek is 40 hours but overtime may be required to meet production deadlines
· Considerable bending, reaching and lifting may be required
· Production shop is often noisy
· Monday – Friday
· Full Time – 40 hours weekly
· Required to use all Personal Protective Equipment (shoes, glasses, hearing & safety vest)
· Flexibility to work Overtime on short notice either daily or time to time
· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
· Manual & Physical dexterity required
· Work involves sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, lifting, walking
Qualifications
· Manitoba Grade 12 required
· Ability to read, write and speak English required
· Post-secondary certification in Industrial Welding required
· CWB certification preferred
· Three years recent (/GMAW) welding experience in Metal fabrication preferred
· Forklift training and/or experience preferred
· Proven health and safety orientation
· Ability to manage staff
